Semenov How long is this supposed to work? Because it looks like nothing happens (after entering the password, the cursor appeared, but without a username).

As your PC is fairly old and doesn't have any cryptography co-processor hardware, the process will run for a while as it is calculating the checksums of all files installed by a package on your system and comparing them with the checksum recorded in the list of files in each package.

    @ReillyBrogan

Semenov 's lspci output shows that he's using the nouveau driver; do we even have a supported NVidia Xorg driver for the GT220m chip he appears to be using?

And how much of this has to do with e.g. LDM?

FTR, I have an old C2Q Q9400 box and a GF GT240 card that I can help test with as/if necessary. This hardware config should be somewhat similar in terms of age and driver support.

I will state for the record that I'm not surprised to hear that the nouveau driver performs poorly and tends towards glitches. This has been my own experience with nouveau as well as soon as 3D acceleration is involved.

ermo That GPU hasn't been supported since the 340 nvidia driver which was EOLed quite a while ago. The nouveau driver is his only option, and considering that it's built into the kernel there's a decent chance that booting to the old kernel might help ( @Semenov hasn't reported back whether that helps or not). Another issue might be something to do with the mesalib update since I think that noeveau uses a user-space driver in the mesalib package.

ReillyBrogan How old? I tried 6.1.24-230 and 6.2.14-232. And how to install LTS kernel? What version? Because today I tried Neon and Mint MATE, and they work perfect.

The older kernel you'll find in the repo is 5.15.61-lts. You might want to try it.

          This one?
Russian translation is a little bit strange.

Nope, it wasn't, but I download 5.15 LTS, and it looks the same, but already 3 hours without crashes.

Semenov the package is called linux-lts. you have to run sudo clr-boot-manager update afterward too, I think, and pick the kernel you want in your bootloader.

ReillyBrogan Yep, it looks so. I switched to 5.15 and yesterday it worked with no chrashes.

Does it mean that now Solus is not for me? Because if this is only KDE issue, I would prefer to stay with Solus and switch to MATE after 4.4 release.

It's quite probably a kernel related issue, there's something in branch 6.X that doesn't play well with your hardware.
Pretty sure that even switching to Mate will cause problems if you're going to run a non LTS (5.15) kernel; which is a problem, since sooner or later the 5.15 branch will be EOLed (like the 4.X branch before it that was used as LTS on Solus).

            UPD:
Nope, just now Solus has been frozen even with 5.15.

I would do a fresh install and updates first thing after install and see if problem persists
If it does I would seriously look at getting more current hardware
Running a modern Os on older Hardware you probably will have some issues Its nobodies fault really
Its near impossible to keep stuff going forever unless you regress backwards again in the Os or change to another
            Os.
And the amount of time wasted both yours and the programmers is of no benefit to either
But thats up to the developers I am not one and dont speak for there decessions or help

Just my opinion not trying to ruffle feathers either
There are many ways to look at it I guess whatever fits your situation I guess.

            Mod edit for formatting

apparently I don't understand how to post things neatly.
but, i'm having the same freezing issue.
i can recreate it fairly consistently if i open 30 tabs of youtube and play several of them at once

            Hello,
            Thanks for updates !
            But :
I have the same Issues with an 2 years old Laptop and Budgie Desktop Enviroment :

            • 2 years old Laptop
            • 8 core 3.6 GHZ CPU
            • 12 Go RAM
            • 1 To SSD for Data + 256 Go MR2 for system

NB : Encrypted disks : LVM for SolusOS and LUKS2 for Data that can slow down Linux but not freeze it

            Mate DE seems not affected

            Best regards

Today I noticed the Nvidia driver in the list of updates. How can I switch between drivers? Or how to find out which one is used?

Semenov How can I switch between drivers? Or how to find out which one is used?

I would just run doflicky. If it's a newer driver -- and appropriate for your system -- it should be updated. I don't know of a way to switch between them, sorry. I've never needed to do that.
