I don't care for the Gnome DE at all, but I downloaded it out of curiosity. I installed it on an SSD for my workstation, and created a Gnome VM on my laptop. I want to learn more about the DE, and keep an open mind, but so far it hasn't appealed to me as a daily driver.
My favorite DE for most purposes is Budgie, for its beauty and speed. Nothing about it ever gets in my way on most computers. The one exception I make is running MATE on the media machine that's connected to my television. It handles streaming more smoothly than Budgie, at least, on that machine. Plasma has always seemed to be a sluggish DE, compared with Budgie, and I haven't found any benefits to it that would outweigh that disadvantage.
I've learned that one will always find a feature or two in one DE that one would like to see in another. E.g., In my daily use, I would love to be able to have 10 workspaces in Budgie, but it's arbitrarily limited to just 8. I'd like that feature from MATE to be in Budgie, but not enough to make me switch to MATE for most uses. If Budgie weren't available, though, I could be perfectly happy with MATE.
