Dark theme not works on "Files"

Not a toggle button as in the Budgie settings dialog, but still a choice between light and dark global themes.

And if you select the dark global theme, the gnome-control-center accepts that dark theme as well.

brent That's because in your picture you're inside the "Privacy" section (probably because that was the last one you went into). So you have to click on that positively tiny arrow in the top left to get back to the overview, then select "Appearance"

For what it's worth, when I try to help with a Budgie issue, I do it with a Budgie machine. In this case, a fully updated Budgie VM, which makes it easy to take screen shots from Spectacle on the host machine (which is Plasma).

If you're not seeing what appears there, you're apparently not looking at gnome-control-center. Either that, or there's something really weird going on. More than usually so.

EbonJaeger Yeah, seems like something else is in effect too, because e.g. the "Ant-Dracula" is dark (in Files) for me even without toggling "Dark" Style in the Appearance settings. For most of my other themes it works like described above though.

brent There is no "Appearance" section in Budgie Control Center. Settings which are present in both should be shared. So if you set something in Budgie Control Center, the same toggle will be switched in gnome-control-center and vice versa.

Or did you mean the "Dark Theme" toggle in "Budgie Desktop Settings"? In that case I don't 100% remember what it affects apart from Budgie Desktop Settings itself and the Budgie menu. It's unrelated to the gnome-control-center config in any case (now, might change in the future for all I know).

In Budgie, I open terminal then launch gnome-control-center, and toggle to Appearance and choose Dark Theme.

Kill app. Open budgie-desktop-settings. "Dark Theme" is always toggled On--I never play with that. While I'm in there I play with different themes (lovn the Yarus and Surfns).

I watch the windows and icons and widgets and open applications change with all my playing.

if you are waiting for the weird part, here it is: the only thing that does not change during theme change time is Nautilus. It's Dark, yes, but never changes. Hell I don't even know what dark theme it is in. It won't switch to a light theme either.
extra wrinkle: the folders icons will change theme when toggling themes but not the dark theme background.

Conclusion: gnome-control-settings is the real boss of Nautilus? It is only obeying that app right now.

It's the first time I've ever seen it. I've tried before, but it was whie I was signed into the terminal as root, doing a bunch of maintenance. As root, all I could get were failed assertion errors. I finally tried it as a regular user, and suddenly things worked.

Based on that, I now assume that themes are installed per user profile, not per system. As the only user of my machines, I didn't immediately appreciate that difference.

WetGeek per profile or per system is good but as I'm the only user I likely can't tell the difference.
Went back to gnomecontrolcenter to switch my appearance back to original setting but now I'm locked out of that:

$ gnome-control-center

(gnome-control-center:11704): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 14:22:11.258: Settings schema 'org.gnome.shell.app-switcher' is not installed
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

It just launched as sudo which is newly disturbing to me....because I never had to launch it with sudo before. Granted, I only met this app today🙂.
Mucho digital head-scratching and weirdness lately. I wish there was an (american) football game was on.

weirder and weirder.....

went sudo gnome-control-center to change back my appearance settings and they were changed back already. They reverted back. Notification settings I made also gone. Moves that I made were un-made by unseen hand.
Why did this app let me launch it unprivileged (when I made the changes) if it was never going to respect those settings to begin with?

brent DON'T needlessly launch apps with "sudo". This'll only change settings for the root user (at best, or mess with your system in other ways).
The fact that it no longer launches is a different issue, maybe fixed by the libgtk-4 update that didn't make it into the sync unfortunately

Installed yesterday. Almost nothing follows the Budgie theme, only an old adwaita theme. Only distro specific stuff and the budgie desktop is in the Plata-theme.

I'll try to reinstall this evening because I did some changes in theming, and it may be the cause for me.

drama, reinstalled yesterday and it's a bit more coherent:
• Files and a few others work with Plata
• I had to install MATE versions for apps that were using old adwaita theme
• Calendar is using new gnome theme, I didn't find a MATE one
• Other themes get white apps, even with GNOME control center defaulted to dark theme.
• Nautilus only uses Plata theme if GNOME control center is set to white theme (even if theme is dark), with other themes it gets white.

I am entirely unhappy about this issue as well. Ever since the Josh Strobl split and began working on Budgie separate from Solus I've found that my computing experience has sharply declined.

That said here is an idea: Switch to Dolphin from the Flatpak Store.

There are existing issues with using Dolphin that my roommate and I found ways to overcome. They can be found in this link.

Also if you have issues with any theme not sticking on a Flatpak app here is a possible solution.

I suffer from a genetic disorder that is slowly causing me to become blind. The sharp blinding white from the Files causes me extreme discomfort. My eye has started to go lazy since this issue began because of the extra time I had to spend figuring out ways to view my files .

Unhappy.

jrsilvey, what about GNOME Calendar? Kinda my only problem for now. The other problem is that dark mode doesn't work, only dark themes (not neutral themes).

You can fix this issue very easily with a single change in the dconf editor. I just figured it out.

Not to be contentious, but just very surprised. My Budgie VM was also updated as of Saturday, early morning, and it seems to be quite different. Materia-Dark used here, too.

I wonder what the difference is?
