WetGeek Now that you've had more time to play with the Ubudgie release, how's that going for you?

So far, so good.

I discovered one small glitch.

I enabled auto login in the Budgie Control Center, which meant the Edge key didn't load on boot (keyring not activated on boot), so I disabled auto login in the Budgie Control Center to return to the original setup. For some reason, that didn't take (the BCC showed auto login as disabled, but auto login continued after reboot). I checked the lightdm configuration file that was created when I enabled auto login, and auto login wasn't commented out (as it was supposed to be), so I had to manually change the configuration file by commenting out the auto login line. Otherwise, no problems at all.

I'm not sure if this is a UB problem or a Budgie Control Center problem. The next time I'm in Solus Budgie (set to auto login now) I'll disable auto login in the Budgie Control Center and see if it takes or not.

If it takes in Solus, then it is a Ubuntu problem. It if doesn't take in Solus, then it is a Budgie Control Center problem. Either way, I'll document it and report it, as soon as I've isolated the issue.

Otherwise, no issues that I can find. I installed from scratch from USB and have been setting up applications, using them all, and generally looking for problem children, but I'll continue working with it for a week or two.

tomscharbach Well, you aren't far off. I was just being snotty, for which I apologize. Ubuntu Budgie is the exception that proves the rule right now, I suspect.

Don't worry 🙂, no need to apologize, I was too categorical. There's always an exception to any rule!

WetGeek I think Ubuntu might be the only distro that supports Secure Boot, but it's been a while since I looked into that. pretty sad if so...

I'm pretty sure that the Ubuntu derivatives support Secure Boot, too. I know that the official "flavors" all do. SUSE and openSUSE support Secure Boot, and I think that Red Hat does, but it has been a while (a year or more) since I checked.

My guess is enterprise-level companies (allied with Microsoft and Intel to one extent or another) are more likely to support Secure Boot than community-based desktop distros. The irony is that enterprise-level computers/servers have less need for Secure Boot because you can bet that all the hardware/software used by professional managers is both mainstream and vetted within an inch of its life before being put into a production environment.

I just got a custom i7 4770 (something like that )with gigabit board 16g ram and 500g samsung evo room for six drives dont think it was used much case is kinda weird on top on the outside has a slot you can plug a sata drive into without taking case apart plus all usb ports ect ontop kinda cool Now got figure what to do with it..
Nas,linux not sure.
Was free tho and works with win7
Oh and I forgot the winder in the side panel so I can watch the fans spin..rofl

in my quest for a competent bare metal companion to Solus (that isn't WIndows, I believe I found it. Artix Linux. Spend an hour in their version of xfce. And lxde. Intuitive like Solus in many ways. It's going bare metal now.

You can see how they feel about systemd🙂
Only distro I've seen so far where resolution/graphics/icons are as important as Solus' commitment to it. Icons and look are very crisp. Not Budgie-crisp but better than the rest I've tried.
Now comes the lingo and packaging idiosynchrancies...
"BTW, I use_________" I ain't that guy yet😉

elfprince Great tip. How do you guage these things? From distrowatch I went to artix homepage, didn't see what you saw but I did see that weird ffmpeg thing that looks like calamity. I have what they call a stable version. Must explain the arch memes I see where "I only spent two hours fixing arch, so it was a good day" but every distro gets poked fun at.

brent Well, I saw the 'exit' of things, and 'entrance' of new things. That spells to me that things are not that 'stable' or settled. Especially on a rolling distro, that can cause major breakages. Think Arch Linux....... 😄

I do not trust fancy desktops or fonts, but the system's robustness instead. Actually, I will be embarking on a project, to install a FreeBSD on my old IBM Thinkpad T60, including GUI. If that works out well, I will repeat the procedure on a more recent/newer computer, desktop or laptop.

@brent its just a sata slot molded into the top you can do up to the regular size disks which is cool no more taking covers off or leaving them off its an 8 banger to. Oh its already got colored led fans..
Heck if I did not even use it the samsung evo 850 was worth the find but I have a feeling it will replace the one i5
with the crashed gnome. By the time I get done doing stuff to win7 will know if it has any problems

tomscharbach I haven't used a static release distro since I moved from Ubuntu to Solus in 2017, so I am not all that familiar with how static releases work currently. ... I'm assuming that UB will use point releases (22.04 to 22.04.1, for example) to track Budgie point releases (e.g. 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 or 10.7.0, for example) but is likely to hold off on Budgie 11 until a full release (22.10, 23.04, whatever). I'll have to wait and see.

David Mohammed (UB's lead) posted an FAQ on the UB forum last night that answered the question:

Support though does NOT mean introducing new features into software available in the Ubuntu repositories - or at the very least only minor-minor features. That means a big change such as a v10.7 or a v11 budgie-desktop will not be introduced into a LTS distro since these big releases involve risk. The rewards do not (arguably) outweigh the risk of potential breakage. LTS releases are used by many hundreds of thousands if not millions of people and its impossible to test thoroughly all the combinations a piece of software needs to interact with.

In short, Budgie will stay on 10.6x during the 3-year lifespan of UB 22.04 LTS. I'm content with that. Budgie 11 is going to be a big step, I suspect.

Legolas, you're a braver man than I. I tried BSD once, a long while ago, and gave up before even getting it fullly configured to my liking. I haven't tried again yet.

elfprince thanks for your insights. I'll be sure to consider the exit/entrance of items as a health indicator---appreciate it, I'm new to assessing these things. Robustness is not something I've considered either.

Quality-wise, Artix is the closest thing to Solus that I've seen in 20 distros...I like it and will continue to understand it until I break it!

Good luck on resurrecting the T60. BSD should be light enough. I'm happy you are happy with it. Like wetgeek said, I went as far as I could with it either. You need a very honed 6th and 7th sense for that🙂.

WetGeek Fortunately, my needs are frugal. Just need a working and stable OS, a low key minimal window manager and a working browser. That T60 is a 32 bit and only has 3G ram.

Good luck with that. I'm not sure I ever got that far with BSD. (Or Arch, for that matter.) Maybe I could have if I'd stayed with it longer, but I figured life's too short for that.

brent I hope you will have a good experience! I am far from an expert on these things, perhaps nothing to be spooked about. You may want to look into Salix as well, another 'ix' distro and a Slackware descendant. I've heard good things in review a while back.

elfprince I wonder if the -ix is subconscious? I did look at NuTyx and Salix. Now Artix. I did not see anything common like deb or apt get or pacman or anything. Just very comfortable with a 5-letter operating system🙂

current fixation is a weird (my kind of weird and wonderful) distro named Bodhi which is a riff on ubu but they invented their own desktop (moshka) and themes....it's 100% comitted to being green like Kermit and Buddhist-inspired. I've never seen anything like it, and frankly it's the only thing I still love after all my spring hopping flings.
Did not play nice with Solus when I gave its own partition to make its own grub....nightmarish....
...think I gotta go ahead and give it's own 512mb/boot and ext paritions next time. Right?

Anyways way cool if yr till hopping.
