Konsole is my favorite out of the box set up, but I still use gnome-terminal cause I don't want to bring all the KDE dependencies that go with it into my Solus Gnome.

For gnome-terminal, I set it to white on black, Linux Console palette, and adjust the transparency a little. I'd like to remove the boxes from the directory files. They just make the visibility of what I'm trying to read harder.

papakanush Are you referring to the way ls --color=auto colors directories that are "other writeable"? When a directory has its permissions such that other users can modify it, the default coloring is usually a green background. I also find it hard to read, so I change mine. You can refer to this StackOverflow thread to see how to change it with dircolors: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/94498/what-causes-this-green-background-in-ls-output

(Or you can change the permissions of your directories, e.g. chmod 755. The crazy coloring is usually meant as a warning.)

I just changed the OTHER_WRITABLE line in a custom .dircolors file to what I wanted, in this case deleted the background color and bolded the text:
OTHER_WRITABLE 34;01 # dir that is other-writable (o+w) and not sticky

Harvey Any reason why you are not using guake? I saw that it utilizes gnome-terminal, so I was wondering why not to just use that, just installed it and it seems cool 🙂

[deleted] It doesn't utilize GNOME Terminal, it just utilities the VTE library as well as libutempter for terminal emulation. See https://github.com/Guake/guake/blob/master/guake/terminal.py

Well I'm running Plasma (KDE) which uses QT not GTK. Not that this would prevent it from working but in general, qt apps ntegrate better into Plasma, themeing for example.

I have several computers one of which uses Budgie desktop environment on that system I use guake.

I have also used terminator in the past which with some configuring, can be used as a drop down terminal also.

I enjoy it though, now that you people made me try it on accident. Using zsh (inside tmux) with oh-my-zsh and powerlevel10k. I love it!
It took me a two tries to set everything up in a way I like it and get used to the keybindings of tmux, but now I love it.

After spending 8 years in my comfort zone with gnome-terminal, I have spent the last few months with Alacritty and am really happy.

It's cleaner, lighter, crisper and I'm comfortable with it. It has a config fie (a .toml) that's pretty easy. I just keep it stripped down.

Anyone else leave their comfort zone emulator for a new one lately?

Not lately. I use Terminology everywhere, but I don 't think it was available when this thread died and was buried.

so you've been happy with that at least 4 years. I do remember you dabbling with a couple others during all the distro threads.

Buried, maybe, but never forgotten 🙂. The staying power of a terminal emulator, or the reason for abandoning one, has always been interesting. This is the window to the nerve center of any distro and basically synonymous with Linux for sure.
