I use alacritty as my terminal emulator and (heavily customized) bash as my shell.
When logged in with Budgie, I have a GNOME shortcut to launch alacritty with Ctrl+Alt+T and it uses a custom color scheme.
When logged in with i3wm, it borrows from my i3 theme (either gruvbox or solarized). On my work machine (same dotfiles), I use urxvt (daemonized) as my terminal in the i3wm environment, same(ish) shell settings though.
