ycooreman Really? I find Budgie allows for more customization and is more intuitive than GNOME. The freedom of choice 😃

jppelt Budgie settings are pretty simple/basic. Too basic for some who love to deeply customize their system but excellent for people who are looking for simplicity and like to find essential things without having to search in a jungle of parameters (looks towards plasma).
Budgie's phylosophy is to not get in the way so the user can focus on the tasks he/she is busy with.

kyrios It certainly does that, but not more so that Gnome in my opinion. I see its advantage more in the slightly lighter resource use and the fact that it's default setup is more classic/dare I say 'usable' than Gnome for new users. Especially those coming from Windows or Mac

kyrios Plasma is like "Hey here's the settings menu. Every setting has at least 3 sub-settings, and all of those can be further customized another 12 times. Oh and if you're not happy with that, we have a separate settings app for that!"

Only show setting A if setting B is enabled, but only on a Sunday
Don't show any settings
Show only odd settings
Remove setting with less than 5 characters in the name if clocks are in summer time
Call settings "Bjorgenstompherungs"

ycooreman I never liked vanilla GNOME w/ the (minority) exception of enjoying not having Xs and Os on the top right bar. I used KDE for a long time but always went down the customization rabbit hole. Felts this compulsive need to customize just because I could. Budgie came into my life and I never looked back...

jppelt Gnome sometimes feels like it went too far the other way, taking too much out, but at least you can add things in again with extensions. I have to admit, that's maybe not the best approach for completely new users. KDE users are right, KDE is a lot more customisable, but that's mostly good if you enjoy customisation for the sake of customising. I have no problem with that of course - it's not too different from distro hopping in that respect. In the end, the main reason I don't like KDE is because it looks like a bling cousin of Windows and I want to get as far away from Windows as I can possibly be

ycooreman Then there are those who want to be Mac alternative and look too much like Mac OS. I want to avoid both...yes, DE hopping, it was a thing. I used to customize my KDE until it looked a little like what I now have with Budgie - did not want a Windows look. GNOME icons feel almost too childish too. The worst is Elementary OS - I feel like I'm in a Kindergarten class.

jppelt I've been a Mac user for a long time (still am, work laptop and personally for making music). MacOS is great but I don't like Apple's business model and their attitude towards privacy and personal data, no matter what Apple says. And the last thing I want is for Linux to look like MacOS. What would be the point of that! It's like cheating on your wife with a copy of your wife

jppelt I actually don't mind elementary OS. I like the Pantheon DE and think it does look pretty nice. But it's just like Catalina.
I was distro hopping for almost a year before I found Solus. Since finding it, I've stuck with Budgie, but I've also got Plasma, Mate, and Gnome on VMs.....I may have a problem....

I haven't been prised away from Gnome so far. I do appreciate Budgie's simplicity and performance though, although I have more of a weak spot for XFCE if just looking at performance.

What's going on underneath though is getting more important to me than what happens on the surface. So as long as the desktop doesn't get in the way, it's stability and access to software that's more important. I think that's why I'm in the Solus camp now, even as a reasonably longtime Manjaro user.

Decided to try Budgie again, embracing the (relative) simplicity.

It's certainly very good, but I'm a big fan of Solus so I'm not sure yet how much me liking the Budgie spin is due to the OS underneath or due to Budgie DE itself 🙂
