kyrios Remember when someone tried to put a tablet-touch interface to the desktop? Yeah, that's Windows 8.

I'm talking practical, simply use software center to remove gnome desktop. If you were following previous thread then it kyrio mentioned Gnome desktop as android GUI. For a user, If one install 2 desktops and on login he can choose which desktop to login. I had being practically doing it to get a feeling of budgie that's old gnome2 style.
On uninstall or removal of any one desktop of the desktop. (Solus) to take over next available desktop from next reboot. And this has failed, so my system never recovered.
If you have solution, a fix then talk otherwise it just waste of time to explain oneself in different words. Chau

Budgie relies on the Gnome stack for a lot of its functionalities, so if you only had Gnome and Budgie installed and you removed Gnome (again: how ? I haven't found a way to remove in bulk a whole DE via Software center, so I guess that you removed the packages one by one...) you would have a less than usable system.
The solution ? Log in via terminal and rollback to a previous, stable and functional state

dostana To repair your Budgie DE. run this command in terminal

    budgie-panel --reset --replace &

I believe the reason you have black screen at login is Budgie/Gnome use different login - slick-greeter/lightdm-gtk-greeter

Quite simply the best DESKTOP distro (irrespective of DE) currently available in the Linux world, but everyone here already knows that.

The real question: where is Solus 4 Plasma? The notion that it isn't stable yet is, quite frankly, an inexcusable lie or gross misinterpretation of reality on the part of Solus' honored developers. Look, I know you're stressed and might not be seeing things clearly, but I've thoroughly tried them all. Every distro, every cycle, on a variety of different hardware. There is not one Plasma distro that comes close to the present high quality and stability of Solus'. Not one. It's been a daily driver for me since late 2018, and it's time for some official respect!

JohannPopper Sorry Johann, but Plasma is on vacation for at least two weeks. (lol) Then I suspect we'll see some action.
Like you, I've been very happy with Solus Plasma edition.

JohannPopper I think it's time for some official respect from you towards the volunteer developers. We are not stopping you from using it. It will be official when it's official.

CraigMatze GNOME requires GDM to login to GNOME, Budgie works on either.

Justin Any chance that Budgie 11 is going to have it's own login manager? I just wish we could stop depending on stuff developed on gnome so much.

Fatih19 Budgie doesn't use the Gnome login manager. GDM is only used by the Gnome edition of Solus. Also there is already lot of things to do for Budgie 11.

The more is added in the Budgie 11 roadmap, the longer it will take to have it released... just saying...

My appreciations to Solus Team, Frankly speaking Solus got me addicted after installation. After 3weeks of tedious testing with different distros to get a snappy and responsive system. I accept Solus is snappy and good for my AMD A9 Acer laptop. Though i love Deepin for its elegance and Gnome DE. But i had to take a U-Turn to Solus Budgie DE and have to accept what team is giving to community is good. I would suggest Solus developers to explore best practices be included in Solus. Stop redundancy and complexity like KDE or other DE make each and every icon or menu meaningful. Live with KISS concept.Chau

kyrios If you're going to rewrite the whole thing, might as well make it good. I wouldn't mind if Budgie is released next year. As long as it's worth the time you've taken IMO it's fine.

Fatih19 Using someone else code isn't a bad thing (especially if it's have the same goal or can be easily integrated). Solus Budgie actually use LightDM for the login manager and we can customize the look for Solus by implementing our own LightDM's greeter later.

I just wanted to say that this version pretty much made it possible for me to switch fully to Linux (especially gaming wise). Thank you for this distro, it is VERY MUCH appreciated. It runs smooth on my desktop PC and everything works from the start. Keep up the good work!

dostana Wasn't my decision to rewrite Budgie. If the changes are drastic enough, long wait is worth it. That's what I was saying.

Joined forum to make this post as new arrival to Solus. Chronic distro hopper here, been waiting for a new Solus before test driving it. Running now off live USB as I write on older ACER Travelmate 5735z, 4Gb ram. Everything worked straight away, wifi, sound, plays YT vids and FAST. So impressed I am gonna wipe a freshly setup MX and go for Solus install. Thanks! 😁
