Solseek Now Available

I have been using Solseek for a couple of weeks now to do my updates. It works great for that. It may be my imagination but Solseek seems to do updates faster than Discover. And I like the way it shows me the progress of the updates. Thanks for a great program.

And no "error occurred"- messages, after waiting for ages for something to happen.
Also search- functionality is much user friendly in Solseek in my opinion. It seems, I am able to not find things I know are there, in Discover.
One thing I noticed and learnt that I must manually clear the cache after updating with Solseek. That is sudo eopkg dc
edit. I *must clear the cache because it's a bit crowded in my hard disc.

Solseek doesn't really load anything to tmp. It does call eopkg and flatpak actions, but it does not use /tmp itself. Everything Solseek does is done within the .cache/solseek folder in your home directory.

That said, that is a pretty small /tmp directory size. Generally, the recommended minimum for a modern Linux desktop is 2-4GB and even that can push it, as it can quickly fill when actually using apps. It can cause crashing and other issues. How much RAM do you have installed?

Original-Syn Hello, according to the tests that were carried out with the df -h, it seems that if you load something in the /tmp, because you were only using that program. The RAM that the system has is 4 GB. Maybe that's the only downside I have, otherwise everything is perfect.

AAndresH That is what I am saying. I call eopkg and flatpak, those load things into the /tmp. So in a way yes. Generally, you want your /tmp to be at least 50% of ram capacity.

Just did some testing. I get 36Mb loaded into /tmp on launch and when viewing packages, which would be eopkg. That was pretty consistent in testing.

Now that the latest release is out there, I did also want to bring to your attention the wiki where I am adding help and guides. It is also a place that, if you would like to contribute, is an easy way to do so, as quite honestly I have always sucked at writing guides 😉

It is on the GitHub for Solseek at https://github.com/clintre/solseek/wiki and/or I have a redirect from https://solseek.org/wiki as I may eventually move it there. All you need is a GitHub account to contribute to it.

Also, to that point, since I added the ability to have a custom update script in v0.9.0, I have added a few examples if you want to check for updates for things like AppImages (some have abilities to be updated) and use Gear Lever. But it would be a great place to add more examples or snippets for other update types.

Small update this week, actually thought about making it a .5 bump but I didn't. Not even doing a full release post.

Spanish is now available as a language option thanks to @RexFactorem
Flatpak History is now available now that the Solus permission issue was resolved.

Language wise we are now up to 4 with English, French, Polish, and Spanish. Once the GitHub project is 3 months old, I will be able to get setup with a translation tool people can use to make it easier for people to help on languages.

Just got pushed to Unstable, so it should be available on Stable at the end of the week.

I expect most updates for a while to be smaller with language or bugs being the main thing. I am working on the final stretch of the 1.x release along with moss support, which is looking better and better.

Hi there @Original-Syn , how can people with an additional language at the moment before the translation tool is ready? Is it okay to create an additional .ini file?

But absolutely you can create a new ini and do a PR as alfisya pointed out. I have a few pointers in the Wiki on how. It is how French, Polish, and Spanish got there. I barely speak my own language. 🙃

Sneak Preview - Driver Manager

I have been testing and preparing some new Solus documentation around the Nvidia drivers, and as I was testing, I decided to add the driver manager I had been planning but putting off into Solseek. I still have to add all the help and do more testing, but I'm hoping to have it with an alpha tag on the feature this week or next.

Most of the drivers for printers and such are just packages, and I do not need to do probing on the hardware to make sure I present the proper options. With Nvidia obviously I need to do that. If you are using the 10 series or older then it has to be the 470 drivers, while the 16 series forward can be the newer drivers and use the proprietary or open version.

Anyway I got it to a point where I was able to install, uninstall, and change drivers, so I thought I would share the sneak peak...

My computer has an NVIDIA GeForce 1050 Ti graphics card (running Solus Budgie). At this time, I was advised to install the nvidia-glx-driver package set, and it works perfectly.

However, if I understand you correctly, I should downgrade to the nvidia-470-glx-driver package set instead?
If so, should I first uninstall the currently installed packages, restart, and then install the recommended packages, or should I only restart after uninstalling and installing the packages in question?

reon Gnome software does provide a way to install driver. It listed all the way at the bottom at the home page.

reon Yes, if you don't have Gnome Software or Discover installed, this should be able to help. I am also trying to make it in a way that it guides you through which ones and why, kind of like doflicky did.

I believe that card works with the
nvidia-glx-driver as of right now since it is the 580 driver. However when they move that package to the 590 driver I believe it will no longer work. @Harvey can give a better answer on this.
