[deleted] What's broken there?

Are you kidding? It used to display the emoji images, not their identifiers. How can we tell what emoji will be inserted by something like "regional_indicator_a" or "regional_indicator_b"?

Yes, that also annoys me for quite a while.

WetGeek It used to display the emoji images, not their identifiers.

Oddly, it still does, but it's picky about when it does and doesn't. This is the result of selecting that emoji inserter on an existing message (just now).

If someone could explain how to get it to work like this at all times, it would be worth a couple of "heart" emojis, for sure. Maybe even a slice of cake. 🙂 It seems to work correctly when using it to comment on an existing post, but not within the editor while creating a new one.

WetGeek It inserts the emoji visible on the left side of the identifier. Like it says, "Type to search for an emoji". So if you type e.g. :think on your post, the emoji picker will show the closest result.

WetGeek That's not the emoji inserter, it's a reaction inserter, which is a different thing and has different set of emojis.

[deleted] Like it says, "Type to search for an emoji"

I appreciate the additional information, but in the past the emoji picker (in the editor) displayed emojis. I wish it still did. The current version of it is cumbersome and requires an additional step on the part of the user. Not being able to see what emojis are available, how can we know what to ask for? I call that "broken."

Are you implying that it's now working as intended, and will never be fixed?

WetGeek how can we know what to ask for?
Yes, It's usable, but it's not so simple as a system, the emojis have to be less language related .

Yes, as explained last time this is how the Flarum emoji insertion works. In the link that was posted by @brent the last time this discussion came up someone mentions the "Flamoji" extension which works a little differently, but that extension is no longer usable according to the latest posts here or here.

It's not feasible to show you ALL emojis that are available, that would be an incredibly huge list. I DO agree however that it would be nice to have a choice of common ones.

Staudey it would be nice to have a choice of common ones

Indeed. As a Plasma user, I have the Emoji Selector utility, and other DEs probably have an equivalent, or can install one. But that solution also involves more steps: locate the utility, launch it, select an emoji and click to put it in the clipboard, close the utility and finally, paste it in the message.

Thanks for including those links to previous threads. I'm sure I read them at the time, but I was left with the impression that this was not permanent. Obviously, my recollection was flawed--I've been waiting for a fix. That's a bit of bother to insert one character into a message. I'm sure many wouldn't bother with that.

But it's better than trying to remember which emoji to ask for with the present system.

👏 👏 I said this same thing a couple months ago and a forum member said I was crazy, that there had always been non-emojii regional indicators..BS🙂.
All I can do now is type the name I THINK goes with the emoji I want, and choose it, and that seems good enough right now. It's OK.

Maybe experiment fora while, and create a cheat-sheet with the ones you like? That shouldn't be necesary, but it might help.

Or you might be able to find a utility in the repo that's like the Plasma Emoji Selector. I forget what DE you're using now.

Guys, the regional indicators are emojis. Yes, them being what's shown by default is not ideal, but that doesn't mean that it's broken.

              🇨 🇪 etc.

EbonJaeger Yes, them being what's shown by default is not ideal

I think that's something we can all agree on. I assume this is a localization issue, no? But a fist with a thumb up, or a trophy, or a heart, or a steaming pile don't need any translation. What we see is what will be inserted into the message.

WetGeek I assume this is a localization issue, no?

                  No, as the explanation goes:

It is not a curated list of example emojis that first shows up - the regional indicator emojis are the first ones in the data set and so that's why they are listed first.

Has nothing to do with translations.

Staudey the first ones in the data set

Can they be moved in their data set, so they are last? 😆

We have no control over the dataset that Flarum uses for it, it's best to ask them if it's important enough to you 🙂
