Solarmass Meanwhile the OSS and wider web community just keeps asking for a means for us to donate to Firefox development specifically, rather than Mozilla as a whole. As much as I love Firefox, I don't love it enough to throw money at Mozilla as a whole and risk it going to a variety of projects (Firefox Reality, Hubs, WebXR Viewer, etc), that have no meaningful impact on the parts I care about.
I would much rather donate every month for improvements to Firefox, Gecko / Servo, and making Gecko a viable alternative to Blink for building out alternative browsers or even an Electron competitor -- which Mozilla was ahead of the curb with via XULRunner. Unless that happens, we are always going to be stuck with a duopoly on Linux with Blink-based browsers and Firefox. WebkitGTK (GTK port of WebKit) just doesn't remotely compare to either Blink or Gecko.
For revenue generators, in my opinion Mozilla should be working to bolster its first-party services, supplementing them with subscriptions where possible like Mozilla VPN, Pocket Premium, and more. They should build out a privacy-oriented email service similar to ProtonMail, but with lower cost access to custom domains (the reason I opted for Apple iCloud Plus actually). Hell, they already have one of the most popular email clients on the planet accessible via their own foundation. Instead of shutting down Firefox Send, they should have created a paid file storage service out of it.
Rather than any of this, they are opting to integrate advertising in a way that will always, always backfire with the community. Why? Because it is a fundamental disconnect between what Mozilla wants as its revenue generators, and what the community wants.
