mw42815 i wish the original post writer good luck . if for some reason Manjaro budgie or ubuntu budgie etc. does not boot and he has the same problem i believe it could be hard ware related. I recently read where Microsoft is pushing so called "Signature PC" models to OEM . They use a special RAID arrangement for the SSD which makes it impossible to install Linux , BSD , or any other operating system besides Windows . Since you said it was a new laptop this may be the case. Below is a link to an article about one such incident.
Thank for the info. I have been having the sensation that MS has been trying hard to get a share of the information trafficking market of Goo gel and Metadone since the launch of W10. Free limited update from 8.1 until a certain date? And then prolonged? Money given by the biggest pirates that IT industry has ever had since its beginnings? Yeah, sure thing!!
Coming back to the thread theme, if you read my firsts posts, I talk of the feeling that it's been prepared of pre-installed in some way.
mw42815 I sincerely hope that this does not become a trend with hardware manufactures such as Dell , HP, MSI , etc. as that would leave a lot of people " out in the cold" when it comes to trying Linux. Good Luck!!
I've also got that sensation. The top tier of this year's generation of laptops, and all of newer that are coming right now, have Octopussy installed and I could find any model without it. And the new gamer laptops are coming with IR webcams and W11 for our own security.
It's probably just that the manufacturers pay for the licenses very little money and they charge it as it cost for them at market price.
mw42815 i also apologize for jumping in to the thread but i thought this information might help explain your difficulties in installing Solus . the person who sold you the machine most likely erased the actual windows install partition but left the EFI , Windows recovery, and the driver CD partition on the SSD . These partitions are most likely "locked" or encrypted hence the Windows OS menu on the boot screen . I suggest if you are hardware savvy , to buy a new blank SSD from say Best Buy or Walmart , replace the SSD in the laptop, and then try installing Solus.
Well, please, don't. At least, for me. I think it is a fit comment. But, wouldn't it be better to just install the ssd that came with the new laptop in my old one's m2 connection and give it purification fire with shred -vfuz -n 8
? At least it sounds cheaper...
