Budgie 10.6

Since Budgie 10.6 releases today, I wanted to lay out my plans for updating the Solus packages for it, being the new Budgie maintainer. I would have posted this sooner, but there were timing things to figure out with the rest of the packaging team.

With that said, my plan is to push the Budgie updates to the Unstable repo after this coming week's sync, over the weekend. That will allow the most time for everything to be tested in Unstable before going out to everyone on the March 18th sync.

Things To Note:

This release of Budgie includes a forked version of GNOME Control Center. This was designed to co-exist peacefully with G-C-C, and allows more control over the settings that Budgie uses (or doesn't use). Budgie Control Center should be installed when you update budgie-desktop automagically, and G-C-C should be safe to uninstall as long as you don't also have GNOME installed.

The panel sizing is now independent of the panel shadow size. This means that the old default panel size for Solus will look noticeably larger. If you want to retain the old default look of Budgie, a panel size of 34 should do the trick.

The settings for Budgie Desktop View have been moved to a new schema path. This means that if you had changed any settings for Budgie Desktop View, you will have to change them back. This only affects Budgie Desktop View. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to migrate settings from one schema path to another. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Issues:

Once you get the updates, feel free to post any issues you have in this thread, and they'll be assessed whether they should be sent upstream to the appropriate Budgie repo.

Putting the icons where you want is another feature of Plasma that Budgie doesn't offer (yet). Maybe give it a try? Or maybe look for a good therapist who might be able to help you get over this obsession with the icon locations?

"obsession" is quite an accusation from someone who can freely move their icons🙂, my therpist retorted...

beside this was a function in budgie for a long time until it was removed and I don't remember the full story of why that happened, but I really miss this function Budgie.

Maybe something to do with the desktop view? I was using Budgie at that time, I think, but I've always wanted my icons on the left side of the screen (even with Plasma), so no interest in moving them to an unconventional location. Maybe that will be more to your liking after Budgie 10.6 is available?

brent It used to be in Nautilus until the GNOME folks removed it, which is what prompted the existence of Budgie Desktop View. Per Josh, the current way it works is intentional, and likely isn't going to change.

WetGeek I never say never to Plasma. I think it's beautiful. Without veering thread too much 🙂 I will say what's kept me away from Plasma is that for every one package update in Budgie there are 4 in KDE. Everytime I've installed a KDE application the dependencies seem so excessive (compared to what I'm used to.) Having triple/quadruple files than I already have is my impression of Plasma, whether that impression is right or wrong.
It's a very coveted DE and someday, maybe soon, I will visit.

EbonJaeger ok that was the story, I remember. Whenever that topic was brought up I always remember Josh would get tense and mutter something like "it's my goal to build a file manager in my own image that does what I think a file manager would do." I always wanted to see that happen.

edit: me missing this icon freedom is just a 'you don't know how good you got it til it's gone" thing for me. you and @WetGeek: yeah I still whine about it🙂 no doubt about it.

EbonJaeger I have been thinking that the whole desktop area could be something much more, alive. Maybe a viewport to any single application chosen by the user. This could be easy to implement by the budgie developers as the background would be like any other aplication window only beneath everything else, maximized in size and without borders or the title bar. THEN: Some users would obviously choose an aplication that simply draws a static image i.e. the background image. Some might choose a file explorer with freely placeable icons. And some (like me) could choose their own custom made aplication with clickable elements and live content fetched from the internet.

Because this "Plasma is so HUGE" myth is so ubiquitus, I thought I should reveal the truth.

These are the relative actual sizes for the VMs I host with my laptop. You might find the smallest of those a little bit of a surprise.

WetGeek Good point. I heard however of KDE's complex settings possibilities, and that is not for me. 😁

WetGeek I figured base installs would be similar until one starts installing stuff, but I also concede 'good point.' It appears a small footprint. I've never heard the myth you refer to, just anecdotal observation of various it/rm of packages over the years and what it involved that formed my impression.

With Plasma I tend to get lost in the abundance of settings possibilities although I consider myself a person who likes and knows how to handle his computer.
That clickophany called Plasma turns me off it every time I'm giving it another try.
Budgie? Liked it from the start and still do. I can live with a few small missing things that I would most likely find in another DE like Clickophany. But I don't need them desperately. Can do without. Over.

Ubuntu Budgie announced that it will be moving to Budgie 10.6 in the upcoming LTS 22.04 release:

I will be very interested in looking at this implementation when it is released, because I'm interested in seeing whether the Solus Budgie and Ubuntu Budgie builds converge, and if so, how closely. I run Ubuntu Budgie 21.20 in a Gnome Box at present (for purposes of comparison with Solus Budgie), and will use that version and the 22.04 release version for comparison between the two Ubuntu implementations, and then compare Solus's 10.6 implementation with Ubuntu Budgie's 10.6 implementation.

@EbonJaeger Do the Mutter issues also affect Solus's implementation?

Other than what fossfreedom mentioned in his post on the Ubuntu Budgie forum ("... waiting on Canonical to complete the migration steps of ... Mutter before it will be allowed into the release pocket (i.e. budgie-desktop has a dependency of mutter ..."), I can't. I'm hoping that the issue fossfreedom mentioned is unique to Ubuntu and does not affect Solus.

tomscharbach Oh. I don't think he means any issue per se, just that they have a pretty rigid process and timeline for when updates (like a new major release like Mutter 10) have to be done by.
