There is no need for Solus to consider eliminating desktop icons. The "How often do you use ..." post keeps showing up as a current topic, despite Bea's having asked us not to necro her old post.
I'd like to point out (without necroing anything) that desktop icons are, and have always been, a personal choice. Those of us who want to use them can. And those who don't want to use them don't need to. There are two ways to keep them off your desktop: (A) use your settings to disallow them, or (B) simply don't put any icons on your desktop.
Personally, the only desktop icons that I use are the ones I put there, when I put VirualBox icons there. It's very convenient to launch a VM by clicking one one of those icons instead of first launching the VirtualBox manager application and then starting a VM from there. I'd really miss those if I didn't have that choice.
But that's my whole point. They are, always have been, and should remain a personal choice.
