jppelt I don't think I did anything extra other than when I switched on custom date, I added the vertical character.
This is the syntax I'm using %e %b %Y | %H:%M

The default Solus looks great. You don't need to change anything. Only the nm-applet in the system tray doesn't look very good. Wrong place.
