Change ownership of second drive

Okay, so I'm trying to figure out how to change ownership of my second drive, which after some looking into I should be doing with the chown commands, which I can kind of figure out on my own, but one of the principle problems I've had while looking into this is I have no idea who is supposed to be the "owner" so that I can use it to install games from Steam, I'm assuming I need it to be owned by root, as my primary SSD is owned by root, but I wanted to be certain before trying, can anyone confirm or correct this?

Your secondary drive does not need to be owned by root. You can have ownership of that secondary drive. For example, what I did was created /run/media/joshua/pool (it doesn't have to be named pool, just the boring name I gave one of my drives) and used GNOME Disks to set up the drive to mount on system startup and to that specific directory. I made sure the flags were also nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show,rw (especially the rw).

Once the drive was mounted, I did sudo chown -R joshua:joshua /run/media/joshua/pool and now all contents in that drive are owned by me, readable+writable by my user. Then I just added it as another Steam Library, was off to the races.

...... Okay so that all went waaay over my head, but uh, yeah.... Open GNOME Disk.. set it to mount on start up, to a directory of my choosing, which I will create...also in GNOME Disk?

then add flags nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show,rw which looks like something I'd add in the Konsole.?

then sudo chown -R [username]:[username] /[previously created directory]

....does that sound about right?

....also, do I use GNOME disk on the Plasma verson of Solus? It has KDE Partition Manager installed, but I can pull up GNOME Disk in the software center, just wanted to make sure because... KDE and GNOME are like... alternatives to one another right?

I don't use Plasma so I can't speak as to the capabilities of the various KDE partitioning software. In terms of the creation of the directory, that is done independently. Personally I achieved this by doing: sudo mkdir -p /run/media/joshua/pool followed by the chown.

That was listed in the flags in GNOME Disks (when right clicking and setting up the mount options) and ends up corresponding to /etc/fstab flags.

Maybe @Girtablulu or another KDE / Plasma user can guide you on the KDE partitioning front.

well, in case I forget by the time I get any other assistance, I used sudo mkdir -p /run/[username]/extended_data and stopped there, as KDE partition manager doesn't seem to do anything beyond partition management, I don't see anywhere to choose how/when it mounts or anything about flags (not that it's absolutely not there, just, if it is I don't see it...)

i have mine mounted in home/username/data and ive always had ownership of it. i guess its because its mounted in my homedir

Lucien_Lachance so, I don't know how to tell it where to mount, I guess? Like... mine have self-mounted into their own area, it looks like?

In Dolphin, I can open them up by scrolling down on the left hand bar below "places" is "remote" below that is "recent" below that is "search for" and below that is "devices." In "devices" I can see all of my hard drives, so I can access them, I can read/write them, but they're not treated as part of my computer by Steam (and, presumably, other applications would similiarly have issues, like GoG or EGS [if it had a native client, since I'm using Lutris idk if that would actually change or not, idk how that works..]) is there a way to tell it to "mount to [location]" that I could attempt?

Right click the drive, select properties and flags are at the bottom.
Howvereit seems that kde partition manager in Solus build of plasma (or could be a recent change in the stack) only has options for boot and boot-bios flags. you used to see the options for other flags in there too, or you did on opensuse and arch

its been a while since i messed with it, but i have
/dev/mapper/data /home/USERNAME/data ext4 defaults,noatime 0 0
in /etc/fstab
i guess if you look in /dev/mapper you will see what your drive is called and modify fstab accordingly - i dont remember how i renamed my drive to 'data'

you may have to reboot

Lucien_Lachance Honestly, I have no idea what you just said.... Uhm, if I go into /dev/mapper I see three things: Control, SolusSystem-Root and SolusSystem-Swap.... I don't know what any of those are, nor how it relates to this, though o.o

Back when I was using (and building software for) Windows, I named my two drives "System" and "Data." Perhaps you did the same? System was where Windows and application software was installed. Data was for source, git repositories, documents, and so on.

Okay, so I'm just an idiot, who messed up hard on trying to research what was going on lol... I didn't realize that the thing mounted under the same... / (is there a name for that? like, the first / in a given path drive?} as the other drives.. I was expecting that to be like the windows version of C:/ (so the "/" in the start of that drive....) and couldn't figure out why I couldn't change the "/" from one drive to another....

This / is called Root
Now in your /fstab - mount options look like this

UUID / ext4 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
UUID /home ext4 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 2
UUID /drives ext4 rw,relatime,auto,user 0 0
the last one is how I mount my storage

You edit with sudo nano /etc/fstab
make a backup first sudo cp -v /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup
