Yeah, that would be a good idea. I assumed that the computer is connected to a router, and the printer is used as a network printer. If the computer is NOT online, so there's no internal network, then hplip is your friend. Further advice about that situation will need to come from someone else.

he was probably real close to solving this but I don't think he had a good install. feel bad he bailed after the first hiccup

Yeah, me too. I'm sorry I didn't fully understand his situation. I'm still amazed that Solus can find my HP printer and my Canon printer on the network automatically whenever I log on, but can't find a printer that's plugged directly into the computer via USB. That amazes me.

I do hope that hplip will resolve it for him. It's intended specifically for Linux installations.
