Must have least application installed with no noise, let user make its choice. Solus has background unnecessary application updates during the upgrade. If one drills down to selections one can find applications user (myself) don't require, unless it is system required even though be it of 200k of installation. Finally, i let it go as system require by default. My point here is Solus OS to install only system operations functionalities other then that no noise.

If this is requesting a more minimal install ISO it has been ruled out many times (It is already rather minimal). Solus is not interested in creating such an experience. If you want a super minimal installation, you need to use something else.

But what puzzles me is in December last year you stated:

If this is about holding back updates, this has never been recommended, its the most common cause of breakages and this is not going to change, you should always update everything that is installed.

Harvey I think you missed the core of the message, It is download time and ISO size. Solus is snappy on budgie DE, not the gnome DE. Secondly, now Solus Gnome DE, after installation get blank screen. I love to you extension called 'Dash to Panel that gives layout of DE with flat 8 icons in a row, thats fantastic which RebornOS give. The problem with most distros is they packet is with built-in tools like out of box usage. I suggest solus team, why force LibreOffice, Thunderbird or other applications of this sort. That's it, a suggestion is always welcomed as it is a feedback for improvement.::

Because "minimal performance" does not mean "whatever is needed to boot the system and perhaps a DE", it means "whatever is needed to get the system to perform the minimal functions deemed necessary by its developers based on the target audience".
In Solus' case, that means basic home computing ---> which means a browser, an email client and an office suite at the bare minimum (yes, that means that Solus is already a "minimal performance system" based on its target audience).

Regarding your statement/position above and nothing else:
The apps that you say the Solus devs "force" on you are not configured to impede performance. I've never ever read a pre-installed app hindered anything in recent memory.. More imporant I think developers' choice of 'forced' apps--to my understanding---lean not to any brand loyalty but to ONLY to the apps best-maintained, and as a consequence, more secure. OOTB.
I understand your POV---a fast, superlite skeleton distro that the user gets the privilege of deciding EVERYTHING that goes on it. I don't trust myself with that power🙂

I just installed Solus Budgie on a 10 years old machine and it runs just fine while everything works flawlessly. Never experienced that on any Linux Distro before, so I think Solus really does a good job there!

Regarding the included Software I must say that I don't have the impression of an overloaded System. Of course this is a matter of taste and requirement, but things can be removed before usage and they're gone.

Introducing an optional choice for Software to be installed is a nice suggestion indeed. But might raise insecurity for many normal users by having additional choices to make. As far as I understood Solus by now, it is intended to serve the normal user, expecting a usable and stable system out of the box. And it is.

Just my 2 cents 😉

George thanks bro, lovely and its helpful i too created a script to remove unwanted preinstalled applications. I just need bare-bone system, install my choice of applications.

Sounds like you could go the ever popular "I use Arch BTW."

Personally, Solus is incredibly crisp and I love the curated selection. My first install I changed some software - did away with GNOME MPV for VLC, as one example. I then read the reasoning behind the curation and now the only thing I do differently, besides adding a few preferences (e.g. launcher), is to use Vivaldi rather than FireFox. A fresh install in 5 to 10 minutes with what, ₇₀₀ packages, is not exactly weighed down with forced apps and unnecessary noise. Just one man's opinion. As @George mentions, one can always remove the alleged bloat.

PS: I still think eopkg can go toe to toe with pacman and win. #TeamSolus

jppelt I do not know about the arch story, but I think that the success of the Arch is due to aur (repos of users). I hopefully, that solus won't support repo of users. I want solus is been in legal area

jppelt you're right, this just screams "oh, I run arch". 😂

I haven't found many distros available that don't come with some pre-installed software such as an office suite (or just document editor), mail client, IRC, etc. Even "lightweight" distros like Peppermint, and arch based distros like Manjaro and Garuda have a bunch of pre-installed software.

On a side note, I understand the love for Mozilla, but Thunderbird is just not an attractive mail client. It has good functionality and integration, but man, it's pretty rough on the eyes. I like the layout of Evolution, panels and such instead of tabs, but the best looking in my opinion is probably Mailspring. With Mailspring though I miss the integrated calendar and to-do list. Visually, it just seems to fit better with a modern clean looking DE like Budgie on Solus to me.

George I think the 'btw' is also for people to virtue signal their linux creds. If you have the time and want to do it, great. I think it is silly. They do justifiably love the AUR. But even that is overrated. Manjaro starts to go funny if you dip into the AUR well one too many times and they even caution you against it. #TeamSolus

Brucehankins I love Mailspring. Waiting for the update in the repos. I left Thunderbird...standard bearer for a long time but now somehow feels like it is was left in the late 90s.
