How often do you use desktop icons?

I personally never use the desktop icons, it takes up precious ram and they conflict with my wallpaper choices most of the time. I do most of my work using the panel icons and I have everything I need pinned to it. in 95% of the time I never look at my desktop, 5% of the time being when I am not in front of the computer and I've everything closed/minimized.

WetGeek sorry about my one-finger typing. i fell and broke my right arm near the shoulder this morning, so typing is difficult and painful. can't get a cast until sometime next week, so all i have for now is a sling and some opioids.

Absolutely never. One of the first things I do when setting up any Linux OS is
disable desktop icons.

I've never used desktop icons, even under Windows. I'm a huge fan of wallpapers and I want to see my wallpaper, not desktop icons.

i use desktop as my download folder and only that. if i download somewhere else i tend to forget about it, on desktop i see the files are there, but its not important

That's gonna be a hard pass for me on the desktop icons, no thank you. The desktop is only there when I'm not doing anything and everything is minimized. Otherwise I just access all my stuff via the web browser or the files manager. Plus I love to see my wallpaper unobstructed in all its viewing pleasure!

nolan I'd love to see the device I just connected in the desktop even if it isn't mounted, maybe a good feature for future budgie?

Probably not. I would have to handle all the mount authentication and auth dialogs. The desktop icons implementation is not a file manager, that's what a file manager is for 🙂

nolan Add "places" to your Budgie Panel, I use ejectable media constantly (SD card for my 3D printer), it gives you easy access to them and I such a time saver!
You might need to install budgie-extras to have it.

re-assessing my own needs, my desktop is a true cluttered 'desktop'---it's littered with documents I have to use or amend before filing. I have logs on the desktop. I am merging pdf's. etc. I click on desktop files all day.
I'd hate to lose that functionality and I'm speaking here, and voted, as a working stiff, not a casual user.

Use desktop icons only when there is something i am workign at. E.G. a doc file that im working on this week.

I have no icons on my desktop and don't miss them. My frequently used apps are pinned to the panel, and the rest I reach via the menu. Most of the time I don't see a single part of my desktop, so my wallpaper is almost useless too 🙂

I used desktop icons only for important documents. For other i have "places" applet and preferred icons on my dock

No icons or files on my desktop, neither in Solus (or Windows). Everything's handled in Start Menu.
Clean desktop, nice wallpaper, simple Budgie taskbar always liven up my mood.

I never use desktop icons too, for most reasons already exposed in this topic : I use the launcher (alt+f2) in Budgie or icons for fav apps in the panel.

DataDrake Everything one needs is on the panel or dock. Desktop icons trash (no pun intended) the place. There is no organization. I only keep three things permanent on my lower dock - files, terminal and browser. I remember the old window days and even some modern Mac users, files and icons all over the desktop - just looks so messy and not easy to file/organize/access... Of course, that is the freedom of choice. Given that Solus is desktop focused, it makes sense to have that option.

ruskofd I always use Albert to get to what I need. Best. App. Ever. Super happy it was in the Solus repository. Then again, I'm an N of 1.

Yes, alt + F2 opens the run dialog but I find Albert to be more comprehensive.
