I don't like them. I have multiple monitors and still never see the desktop with everything I'm doing. Just use the app launcher and / or pin certain applications to the panel. Additionally the amount of times I've sped up peoples computer by simply moving the 10,000,000 items they have off of their desktop on Windows, has made me more reluctant to use them personally.
I do however have my 72 year old mothers system (Solus Plasma) setup with desktop icons, it's just easier for her.
To me I see it as a feature for people who have not learned better ways to interact with their system. If they're happy with that, its fine but yeah... I don't like it.
