Lucien_Lachance printed out the essential bits for tomorrow just in case 🙂 just hope i wont have to use the usb stick. its tricky to boot these days on my hardware/setup
Staudey I'm glad Solus is finally going with the times and switching to an emoji-based versioning scheme.
synth-ruiner you mention holding down the power button to shut down the computer- I'm used to pressing the power button to trigger a shutdown signal, but I've always thought holding it down for 5-10 seconds meant cutting power to the computer. maybe this is just a windows thing, since I've never needed to use it on linux 😂 so is it safe?
JoshStrobl synth-ruiner Abruptly shutting down your system is always going to introduce the potential for unexpected / unintended results, especially if there is data written in memory that is not yet flushed to disk. This is precisely why we suggest using sudo sync to force a flush before shutting down. Not always necessary but the idea is avoid as much risk / potential for breakage as possible. It's also why we suggest attempting to perform a logout before shutting down.
N1X3L I was pondering the same as question as synth-ruiner. I've read through all the steps, will use the sudo sync command prior to logout, and perform a full shutdown using the power button. I have two computers running Solus, one boots using BIOS (laptop) and the other UEFI (desktop). Would it be advisable to clear the CMOS on one or both machines after shutdown?
JohannPopper Quick question. "Newer features for EFI-based systems (so we can eventually drop clr-boot-manager)" Cool. What will be the replacement? Like for kernel arguments?
DataDrake JohannPopper There are well defined standards for UEFI boot-management ( see https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/BootLoaderSpec/), so you can expect a statically-compiled utility which generates and updates those configurations for systemd-boot.
ender wahooo maybe it's psychological but it feels so much snapier after that update ! The boot is quicker than ever, I used to have to wait a bit for network connection but no more etc
JoshStrobl ender Nah, it really does legitimately feel faster with the systemd update. Also there was some performance improvements made in the newer stable series of NetworkManager that may also be contributing to it. Glad you had a successful upgrade!
Bouquins All went right, although I didn't read one should do sudo sync before restarting the computer...Anyway, all is right ! Thank you !
synth-ruiner all went fine here (sudo eopkg up, sudo sync, logout, hold power button). honestly not quite sure if that was a normal or hard shutdown since Solus shuts down so fast anyway!
sangheeta update fine here except two fails of systemd reloading, I don't know how to check now if systemd is ok after reboot [✗] Reloading systemd configuration failed A copy of the command output follows: Failed to reload daemon: Access denied [✗] Re-executing systemd failed
JoshStrobl @sangheeta Per our blog post, those two are normal. I don't know how to check now if systemd is ok after reboot Well if you were able to reboot and get into your desktop in the first place, you know it's not broken 😃
