dbarron I run FreeBSD on my server/firewall/router, but Linux distros for a desktop. To me, that's which is more suited for which task.
mark2741 I've always wanted to go to one of the BSD variants but then when I think about what I'm using my computer for (web browsing, youtube, Netflix, Spotify, Steam, etc.) it's a non-starter.
kyrios I have never been tempted by running a BSD on a desktop. And for server, I use whatever my company or suppliers support and (apart from Windows) that's usually either RedHat or eventually Ubuntu. Kiakra As long as you find what fits your needs/expectations that's fine! 😀
Els Yea BSD is out of my league really. I guess it would be fun to install it, but then every little thing that on linux we take for granted could be a struggle over there. I mean as a desktop.
brent @Kiakra You'll be back! And thanks for the education. I've been reading quite a lot of internet articles re: gnu vs. linux. It appears to be a wide gulf in philosophy regarding these two unix branches, and I don't have an opinion other to say one of these branches is much easier on the eyes and the other: it's minimalism is it's point. I got meself a bsd .iso for giggles and a rainy day--but don't know if I got the brains for it.
brent elfprince Correct amundo, thank you. You named the correct 2 parties...I stand corrected. This always happens with acronyms and me...
Kiakra Thanks for your comments guys, 🙂 @brent Probably i won't turn back to linux :9 Bc of i can do what i need to do and what i want to do. Here is my upgraded(!) super good(!) desktop 😅 at least it's 0% cpu
dbarron Err yes, it seems another of those 'but that 3.5% of cpu when I'm not doing anything' and 'it uses 30k of memory..OMG'. I kinda understand, but it's the philosophy of unused resources aren't really saving you anything, if you aren't using them for anything else.
JoshStrobl dbarron Yea they're using i3, am I supposed to be impressed with the memory and CPU usage? I can get the same thing under i3 in Solus 🤷♂️
dbarron Yeah, I have used I3 just a little bit. I'm still not quite comfortable with tiling window managers yet, though I keep telling myself I should probably use one (lol). I believe that I'm fairly firmly locked into KDE now though.
viyoriya Took whole day to install and adding a menuentry in grub along with other disro really a headache..... FreeBSD with Xfce runs at 600mb of RAM grrrrrrr...you would have used solus in multi user target so it will be just under 200mb of RAM.. FreeBSD...Nope...
