NVIDIA GPU users - driver feedback wanted!

As I said before the nvidia-open driver is still loading the same proprietary binary blob. So seeing a significant difference is highly unlikely.

Harvey Yeah, admittedly I was an eager beaver when I saw an opportunity to compare and do a little benchmarking. Now I feel more assured when it comes to driver selection after your feedback and reading the thread more. Appreciate it and have a lovely rest of your day!

I use nvidia-beta since I was interested in using the version 590 of the Nvidia drivers. All good so far.

I used the "normal" one before and even tried nvidia-open. No differences (but nvidia-open will be the future).

My laptop is i9 13950 HX + RTX 4080 mobile. I could also enable switcheroo, it worked, I hope it'll be automatic in the future.

I thought it was normal, but I'm getting some performance issues with some games (example: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth) that I am not getting with Bluefin and Ubuntu 25.10 where the game(s) just run perfectly.

I've also tried the stable Nvidia drivers instead of the beta, and a complete reinstall of Solus GNOME. The game sometimes stutters and the audio cracks, especially in the menu. Sometimes, it freezes in a black screen after skipping a cut-scene.

To be honest I'm unable to tell if it's related to the drivers or something else under the hood :/

Is there a point when the regular proprietary driver is entirely replaced by this new one? If so is there a plan in place to just update everyone to the new version? If not, a guide on how to manually (and safely) remove the old nvidia driver and the 32 bit libraries (if needed) and then install the new driver and 32 bit libraries (if needed) would be much appreciated. I've never had a lot of luck bouncing around nvidia drivers and would appreciate some hand holding... unless you count black screens as luck!

Older system here, Budgie running fine on GTX 980 with drivers nvidia-glx-driver-current nvidia-glx-driver-common nvidia-glx-driver-32bit. Here's hoping the bifurcation of old/new graphics isn't a rigamarole.

5060 on my laptop so it is using open.

2070ti on my desktop and installed the open driver module there as well since that is what I had installed on my laptop.

Have not had any issues on Plasma.

I'm on current kernel and always installed drivers for current kernel, but always same result lightdm service failed to start.
It's notebook with Nvidia Optimus with MUX switch, tried lots of other distros but it seems that it's problem with lightdm or X11 itself as Xfce, Cinnamon ended up same. Cachy KDE with SDDM works just fine, other distros with Kde too including Solus. I'm just used to Budgie ( others with Budgie no matter the flavor failed to boot with same error btw )
If there's anything I can do to help to make it work I'm gonna do it. Maybe because open driver doesn't list 5060 Max-Q version specifically?

I just tested my old Dell XPS 15 which has a 1650 ti and the open version worked smoothly.

Yes it is, forgot to mention that i had to wake up my discrete gpu on every startup through vkcube

Maybe it would be nice to have Nvidia-open 590 driver in the repo too, with beta tag

Yeah, it would be good to have the open version since the proprietary won't work on the 50 series cards.

I have a feeling we are moving to the open drivers anyway, which would make sense development time wise.
