Can't open file manager in gnome

I can't open some apps like the file manager, it happened after the last update

If you can open a terminal, run:
sudo eopkg check | tee /dev/stderr | grep Broken | awk '{print $4}' | xargs sudo eopkg it --reinstall
Also, launch the program in the terminal and show what it outputs.

Hi, I ran it in the terminal, there was a broken package, I reinstalled it, but the problem persists
Maybe in the next update it will work again, it was working fine until the update last Saturday 14/06

I can't open the settings application, besides the file manager and the gnome software app, I used a pendrive with debian iso (gnome Português Brasil) and the settings are:
Notebook: Sansung 300E5EV/270E5EV...
Processador: Intel Celeron 1007U x2
Gráficos: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 2500 (IVB GT1)

My system is in Brazilian Portuguese language

Of all the Linux distros I tested, Solus 4.7 was the one that ran best on my system, better than Debian 12 Gnome. I really liked Solus Gnome, I hope you can find a solution.

abentroth Sounds like this could be an issue with the renderer changes in GTK4. Can you launch the file-manager (nautilus) if you run GSK_RENDERER=cairo nautilus in a terminal?

It's the same on a friends machine with an old Intel HD Graphic. Going back to x11 session solves everything (settings, Nautilus). Seems like an issue with Wayland maybe?

Staudey I ran it (GSK_RENDENER=cairo nautilus) in the terminal and it worked, but when I click on the shortcut it doesn't work, the same for the settings app and for the gnome software app.
How do I fix this issue for all apps that are not running?

Staudey There have been many reports lately in Forum about apps and flatpaks starting with black window. In my experience GTK rendering issues on old hardware are different. Glitches etc.
But this might be related to this mesa bug:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/13337 fixed with 25.1.4 release of 2025-06-18

Moreover, GL renderer was dropped with GNOME 48 I believe, so people would have experienced issues earlier.

It's actually pretty easy to understand. The Solus team doesn't have a team of hundreds of testers with diverse hardware configurations to catch every possible issue. Obviously nobody caught this issue while the updates were in the Unstable repository, so it seems like Solus would benefit from more users willing to test changes early.

Sebastian Yeah, it's most likely a mesa issue. The resulting issues with the new/current renderer are just the symptom. Though useful as a workaround, as proven above. I must confess that I didn't check when the last GTK4 update was before writing the above post, but the symptoms pointed to it ^^

I have installed Solus 4.7 since its release and have never had any problems. The problem started with the last update. I think it can be fixed, or is it possible to uninstall this update?
I had Debian 12 with Gnome 45, I installed Solus with Gnome 47 and everything went well until the update. I don't understand how they can do an update that breaks the system. I ask again, is it possible to uninstall this last update, or can the next update fix the problem?

Yes, it is possible that the next update fixes the issue.

You can also try to reverse the last update following this instruction

Alternatively, you can try to edit /etc/environment with sudo nano /etc/environment and put GSK_RENDERER=cairo in that file, save it and reboot and see If this workaround fixes your issue temporarily.

Sebastian I edited /etc/environment and it worked, although a little slower than normal, but it might be just me... thank you very much, in the next update will I have to edit it again? to get back to normal, or whatever, sorry to bother you, I'm kind of new to solus, but I'm really enjoying the distro

Also, while Solus as a curated rolling distro is really good at being up to date while beeing stable, some hiccups might occur from time to time, that usually get fixed swiftly.
Debian on the other hand is known for it's stability, while beeing a bit outdated.

Me neither, but I kind of know as with my 17 years old laptop I ran in those GTK issues in april and had to set GSK_RENDERER=cairo back then.

The good/bad news is: this morning when changing hard drive right after getting out bed I probably damaged this laptop with static discharge. Now display stays black and I need to get a new used laptop asap.

I didn't think you could do that without the service cover off the laptop and your fingers in contact with something on the mobo. maybe it's more common than I know.

Hey Hey, yes, it might actually be that it's slower. The cairo renderer is old and kind of a fallback and not really tested anymore. You should use it only as long as necessary as it can introduce new problems.
On my machine celluloid video player shows a black window instead of video for example when using cairo renderer.
After next update you should try without cairo renderer and see if your issues persist or have been fixed by update.
For this you can edit GSK_RENDERER=cairo to #GSK_RENDERER=cairo and reboot

Sebastian Thanks again, I have basic knowledge of Linux, mainly Debian, but I would like to contribute to Solus, perhaps testing updates, my PC is weak and old, this could help, I am retired and would have time for this, if I can contribute, how do I do it?
