Shutdown issue since last update

There is a discussion about similar issue in matrix room. @Harvey and @Solarmass encountered it since the kernel was updated to v6.14. Still not sure about the root cause.

Could it be linked to the DE or grahic driver?
Because when shutting down the computer in terminal mode (ctrl + alt + f1) then it completely turn off.
Which logs could we investigate to see what is going on?

Yea, same problem here. Happens almost every time when I shutdown my Solus Budgie from the User Indicator Redux applet. This is system with AMD GPU, my other Nvidia system doesn't have this problem.

Have you managed to get to tty1 (ctrl + alt + f1) in that state? For me only hard reboot or forced poweroff worked.
I gonna try to poweroff system from terminal now.

PS: I never used any sleeping/hibernation mode.

I also have an an AMD GPU (6700 XT) and use the open source drivers

to completely shutdown the pc I go into terminal mode before I try to turn it of not while I turning off from the UI otherwise it won't respond.

only posting as a budgie variable.
Budgie, shuts down fine from off button in system drop-down menu.
Intel GPU, open source drivers, no hibernation/sleep/suspend enabled or installed.

there was no confirmation on this thread that is was a confirmed link to AMD until you said it right here two hours ago, hence my reply, hence elfprince 's reply.
If that's true then infinitymdm is an anomaly or using nvidia?

No problems with shutdown using the Budgie applet here as well. Intel NUC with Intel GPU/CPU, no sleep or hibernation.

Solus 4.7 Budgie, running on the unstable repo with an AMD 6900 XT. No issues with shutting down using the User Indicator applet. I've definitely seen a few reports of this issue in the matrix chats though, so you're not alone. People are looking into it.

No promises re. anomalous-ness 😛

I'm on AMD with open-source drivers though, and using the same graphics architecture as OP. This makes it very unlikely to be an issue with the drivers, although we can't exclude the possibility that it's an issue with his or her model that for some reason doesn't affect mine. Occam's razor would suggest looking elsewhere for the root cause.

Alright in that case which logs are interesting to look at to check what is going on during boot/shutdown process?

By the way how to completely make sure that hibernation is turned of, and also how can I force a fscheck on the root partition during boot?
I am investigating the shutdown issue on my side at the moment.

it happens after latest update too, I tried to shutdown via terminal app 🙁

Another interesting data point, if it helps, is that this issue seems to occur only when the external monitor is plugged into the HDMI port of the laptop.

I have a 2nd Monitor connected to my desktop PC via HDMI, gonna disconnect it and test if it would help.

Thanks for creating the issue and finding the upstream bug report. Sorry to close out your issue right after you reported it! This is something that has to be fixed by the kernel maintainers, and a fix is in the works.

TraceyC I hope there is a fix soon, as I'm on a 14in Lenovo Ideapad 3 AMD Ryzen 5 5625U w/24GB DDR4 system ram for my work laptop, and it will randomly freeze going into idle sleep mode with, or without a 2nd monitor attached, and it won't always fully shutdown keeping the power light on/fan spinning either via terminal shutdown, or Budgie menu shutdown so I have to hold the power button to force it to shut down, so yeah it seems to be model specific as neither of my 2 Intel Core I9 12th gen desktops with AMD RX 6650 XT GPUs don't have this issue, so I think it's more CPU than GPU related with power states maybe?

Since I disconnected 2nd monitor (hdmi) I don't have a problem.
