Harvey saw an article differentiating these two dimms (dimm and udimm dramatically. With very differing characteristics. ref: https://www.onecomputerguy.com/udimm-vs-dimm/ --that's a dense article, Lenovo in a 2017 pdf referred my specs as DIMM. (I know about Sodimm because laptop memory looks funny!)

Harvey UDIMM is often simply refereed to as just DIMM.

maybe it evolved that way in the industry and I didn't catch that nuance?

UDIMM = Unbuffered / Unregistered Dual In-Line Memory Module.
SODIMM = Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module.
RDIMM = Registered Dual In-Line Memory Module.

They are saying in one of their slides that DIMM is registered... Its not. He is using DIMM where he should say RDIMM. They are all DIMM.

I think you may be right, but I've never analyzed it to that extent. I just know that on a laptop with 32 GB of RAM, a large update installs so fast it's hard to see what packages are being processed, except for the very big ones. And I'm pretty sure that more RAM is better for running VMs.

but you can stream Formula 1 etc with no noticeable difference between 16/24/32?
Inclined to keep my money in my pocket but I am intrigued...
...with 16 and a HDD my flatpaks opened molasses slow and so did libre. they are snappier with 16 and an SSD. 32 must be Ludicrous Speed to quote Spaceballs with I saw the other night. (that reminds me).

we have no solus sync yet as of this writing but I want to share an observation. After I cloned solus successfully (thank yougparted) to my new refurb I used used it all of today finally. The flatpak update script that you wrote, and I use, had about 20 flatpak updates. Normally semi-sluggish on HDD, they were much faster and over with in less than a couple minutes.

lotsa words to say, yes, i do notice a BIG difference in updating between a 16GB HDD and 16GB SSD.

Axios I never took offense, all good--I skip a lot of results in the top 20. I like it better than the one I cited above and corsair did not to to sell me memory🙂 so even better.

I am surprised the guy in the article I found had a lot wrong but "onecomputerguy" should have been my clue.

Yeah. My current laptop has 16 GB of RAM, and it handles such tasks just fine. And the Windows machine that streams to our TV also has 16 GB. That's the only task it ever handles - streaming stuff to the TV using Vivaldi - so it's not needed for any heavy multitasking.

I've come to the understanding that at this time, 16 GB is plenty for most personal computers, absent any special needs, like video editing, or somesuch. I haven't felt the need to add RAM to any of my computers that came with 16 GB originally.

I had to upgrade my nephews system from 16->32GB recently as he would run out of RAM playing games. I blame Windows 11, but otherwise I would tend to agree 16 is enough for most people. I would suggest 32 when building a family members PC because the difference is as low as $40 AUD for DDR5 and $24 for DDR4. As I would rather not have to help them again they get more RAM now.

brent Lot of stuff here since I slept! Good info on DIMM memory.
If your chief interest is streaming and maybe getting big programs to open quicker then there may be other considerations to make to avoid performance bottle-necks.
Modern WiFi is fast but if you are connecting on an older protocol then there could be a speed restriction for data received.
Modern processors seem to run at a similar speed to older ones however newer tech has bigger and more efficient caches and more importantly use multiple cores allowing the processor to multi-task and spread workload.
Not all CPUs are created equally - I try to run an Intel I5 processor as a minimum. Avoid Celeron and Atom CPUs for any serious computer use. Never really tried out AMD chips.
Spending your money on a second hand modern-ish PC supplied with no hard drive or an old spinning disc could well be the cheapest long-term money efficient upgrade.
I run a Dell laptop with an Intel i5-7200u CPU and 8Gb RAM and have no problems streaming or with the speed that my programs open. It cost about UK £100 second hand. Desktops give better performance and are much more expensive.

you are right about all that. please tell me, like anyone can walk into my messy brain!, why I always thought a computer's GHz and Bandwidth and ISP played into download speed??? Was that myth?? It's all RAM and SSD?
this what I am getting hung up on in that messy brain, who is rocking on for sure.

all of this is true but after the first day on the refurb I am happy with 16GB so far. videos, music, streaming, fantastic so far., and app response. I will spend no dough, thanks for the great perspective

brent I accept the challenge. Each aspect is connected and there is a bottleneck some where, needing money to reduce. Using car lingo. 0-60 times '69 VW bug vs '24 all electric (dial-up vs fiber-optic) driving on, alley or freeway using snow or race tires.
So a bug on race tires on the freeway is still slow, while an electric snow tired back alley cat is pretty damn quick.
Or taking a Ferrari for a drive in rush hour. WHY. 😆
