Duplicate Flatpak Icons in Plank-Anyone else have this?

Flatpak apps in Plank ^^: Dialect, Mullvad, Ungoogled, Freetube, Librewolf

Flatpak icons that duplicate in Plank when open: only Ungoogled and Librewolf (see above, far right)

Method of adding to Plank: open app, right-click 'keep in dock'
So full uniformity in icons/pins here.

It's an annoyance I've lived with but it's starting to grate..tried drag and drop etc.

So what do I do? See what Mullvad, Freetube, and Dialect all do the same and apply it to Librewolf and Ungoogled? And how would I do that? Thanks to anyone that can point me in the right direction.

[Extra credit points if you notice what app staple is missing from lineup as I completely stopped using it.]

My guess is this has something to do with the flatpaks desktop file. I believe flatpak desktop files are mostly in
/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications

Check if the desktop files from the affected flatpaks contain line
StartupWMClass=
I don't remember exactly whether you have to put there the app name as in the line Name= or the flatpaks name as you find it with flatpak list.
You can check by inspecting the desktop files from the other flatpaks that behave normal in plank.

Changes to desktop files may only have effect after logout and re-login.

so here is where I will begin my journey in seeing how all these app icons differ..you say StartupWMClass= might be a starting point.

you learned to live with it and I live well with it for a while! after a couple years this blatant duplication is irritating anymore

I have half dozen flatpaks none do it so I installed librewolf (And it did it)

It has that in the file from what I read it should work

But I could not get (xprop WM_CLASS) to return anything on Solus.
I even deleted that line no go.

No luck on this end.

link is interesting but I never have luck with most github stuff...another thing I've read about this common problem is sometimes you have to direct the app to where the icon really is, not where it thinks it is.
that's makes a funny kind of correct sense to me. but I don't even know where to start with that.

still my mind is where your mind is, and @Sebastian 's mind is: what is librewolf doing that everybody else is not? or what is it doing that everyone else is not? 🙂 ok head is in knots!

Setting the StartupWMClass= to the same as Name= seems to work (mind upper and lower case letters).
Desktop files in /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications seems to be links only. Best is to go to the directory that actually contains the desktop file you wanna edit and copy it to ~/.local/share/applications and edit the file then. So you keep the changes even after flatpak update.

For LibreWolf, desktop file is in
/var/lib/flatpak/app/io.gitlab.librewolf-community/current/active/export/share/applications

changing StartupWMClass=librewolf to StartupWMClass=LibreWolf

solves this for me.

Sebastian I tried both locations the first location had it all lower case and the second
location is Already like you showed StartupWMClass=LibreWolf
Neither one works for me.

Note I even tried that spelling earlier before you gave the second location..

I deleted that line from the second location StartupWMClass=LibreWolf
and it now works properly

here's SUDO opening the file for edit:
sudo gedit /var/lib/flatpak/app/io.gitlab.librewolf-community/current/active/export/share/applications/LibreWolf

and here's me just simply opening a read-only copy right from the folder:

edit: sudo su shows an empty file too. without permissions I am allowed to see the file? frustrated 🤡 face here

Axios thanks will try right now. have opened system files always---wonder why I was denied even a look at the file with permissions?. It's never happened before 9-12-24....the theme change between gedit/sudo and gedit is also bizarre.

Maybe I need to reinstall Solus on a new platter?

Since there is no librewolf file in ~/.local/share/applications, should I 'save as' the read only file? and what should I call it? it's current name?:

brent Just copy and paste to the new location the LibreWolf file then you can edit in new location
no need for root
Dont change name save as same
Highlight file and right click edit then save simple (I am sure you know)
You can then run the file direct from file manager to see if it works

Dont know what say about ungoogled..lol

brent Yup thats file you want copy to new location you dont have use (Sudo) to just copy

The file manager is doing something dumb. It is taking the Name=LibreWolf from the .desktop file and using that to display the name... Only that is not the file name. The file name is io.gitlab.librewolf-community.desktop

Dolphin is not stupid so it doesn't do this.

save as to .../applications worked.
editing file in /applications worked
(librewolf to LibreWolf then save) worked.
logging out then loggind back in did not work. still two icons.
at least it was you too. back to the drawing board.
