Hi everyone. Today I'm announcing the start of the translation push for the Solus Mate Transition Tool (SMTT). I introduced the SMTT over on the devlog here a while back. It's an application written by Joey to move existing MATE users onto another desktop.

We haven't deployed the tool yet, and we don't have a firm date for deployment either, but we want to get started on translations. This project will also help me and other Solus Staff learn how to administer translation projects on the new platform we are using (Transifex).

What we're asking from translators

Translators will have to translate ~ 50 individual strings to complete a language.

  • Languages we have at least one translator for already:
    • Arabic (ar)
    • Finnish (fi)
    • French (fr)
    • German (Austria) (de_AT)
    • Indonesian (id)
    • Italian (it_IT)
    • Simplified Chinese
    • Spanish (United States) (es_US)
    • Sundanese (su)
    • Russian (ru)
  • Languages we think we need:
    • Many others

I want to translate a language, how can I help?

  • First, you should make an account on Transifex, and note the email you use.
  • If the language you want to help with is already part of the project, you can request to join that language team on Transifex
  • If the language you want to help with is not already part of the project, request it be added on Transifex, or post below. Please be specific about the language and region, if that is applicable. After the language is added, you can request to join that language team.
  • You can also DM me (davidjharder) on Matrix with requests if Transifex is being weird, please include the email you used to sign up to Transifex.

    If you have a MATE installation it will nag you to start the tool with a notification. The tool will guide you to pick a suitable replacement (Budgie or XFCE) and will install it and remove MATE.

    You can choose not to run the tool, but at some point Solus will stop shipping updates for MATE.

        Oh, I might help with Russian. However I have little translational experience - is it a problem?

          decembre-dhiver I don't think so. As long as you are fluent in Russian.

          I think I've added you to the Russian language team, take a look at the strings and see if you are confortable translating them.

            To the users who requested Hebrew and Turkish: I have added the languages, and I now need you to request to join that language. I can't send you an invitation because your profiles are private.

            Thanks to everyone who's helped so far. We have 5 languages completed already!

            Waiting for verification email to come through. They'll be back on Monday to sort that out and then I'll work on Dutch.
