Simple Scan HP Printer Scanner

Hi,

I've just noticed an anomaly that I had not seen before on the simple-scan software.

I am on Budgie Desktop and I use an HP Officejet 2622 printer.

When I want to scan a document of several pages with this application, the first page is scanned without any problem, but when I get to the second page, an error message "Impossible de se connecter au périphérique de numérisation" (unable to connect to scanning device) appears systematically:

Obliged to scan a document of several pages as soon as possible, I looked for an alternative to simple-scan and I found Skanpage.

With this software, I was able to scan all the pages of my document. But, from the 2nd page, by clicking on the Numériser button (scan), I obtained the message "Argument incorrect"; so, by clicking this button a 2nd time, scanning was normally done.

What is interesting is that when we click on the button "Re-sélectionner le périphérique de numérisation" (Re-select scanning device) in Skanpage, it tells us "Failed to open selected device", why?

I have the impression that the error messages on these 2 applications would have the same origin.
Have you ever met these anomalies for the same config?

penny-farthing I would try master pdf editor I have used it to manually scan
multi pages into a pdf file and it works without issues.
This may help narrow down the issue for you.
Be sure to select multi page when the scan screen comes up then it will ask to scan another page.
(sub menu selection)
It is a flatpak.

Since you're using a HP printer, did you try installing the package hplip from the Software Center? And is the package SANE-Backends installed as well?

Yes, it's the case. Last time I use simple-scan to scan a 2 page document, it was on 01/08/2024 and it was OK.

When I try to scan a document from the scanner with this software, it says "Error open device":

I just want to know if somebody can do the test to scan a multi-page document with simple-scan to determine whether it's a bug or simply a problem with my config, so that I can move forward in dealing with this anomaly.

Come to find out the program I suggested to you does not work for me either on Budgie. (mud in my face.)
But I did try document scanner from repo and it scanned multi sheets just fine.
I have a separate scanner and printer so it could make a difference.
Will have to troubleshoot it when I find time.

penny-farthing I'll try on my printer/scanner as well to see if I encounter the same problem, since it's HP too. In the meantime, can you try installing the scanner app but as a Flatpak ? On Solus you can't do it graphically yet (it will be possible very soon as far as I know), so you need to open the terminal and enter the following commands:

1/ Set up the Flathub repos:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

2/ Install the app
flatpak install flathub org.gnome.SimpleScan

Sometimes, just using a different format make the app work.

By the way, if it's doesn't work and you need to uninstall the app:
flatpak remove flathub org.gnome.SimpleScan

2/ Install the app
flatpak install flathub org.gnome.SimpleScan

At this step, the error message was the following:

administrateur@solus-budgie ~ $ flatpak run org.gnome.SimpleScan
error: app/org.gnome.SimpleScan/x86_64/master not installed

And it's the same thing when I uninstall the version of the Software Center, and then when I try this command terminal again.

It's as if simple-scan (or Skanpage too) didn't recognize correctly the device printer, mystery... 🤔

all great advice ^^. I've jump-started two scanners with Gscan2pdf, in repo.

Can confrim this. It scan just fine with any setting but failed for the second scan and pops that error "Unable to connect to scanner". @penny-farthing Can you please open the issue on github with all the reproduction steps, so staff can look at them better ? Ya masterpdf editor has issues with flatpak went back to website download and it worked fine on two
computers.
Go figure.

Okay, I managed to solve this on my printer (HP Deskjet 5820) by installing sane-airscan. After installing that , simple-scan will have another scanner named : "eSCL - Your Printer" in the drop-down menu. Select that and now I can scan multiple pages without any error. To read more abaout sane-airscan, here is their github page. There is a little quirk with sane-airscan: Usually it shows scanning process in real-time, now with "eSCL", it only shows the page when the scan is completed.

if you wasnt using that feature.
Your printer is airscan/print so maybe drivers are just incomplete

I think so too. Or at least manufacturers complicate these things more than they should and linux support by the manufacturer is sometimes lame or nonexistent leaving a throw-a-dart method on any forum end.

all-in-one connection problems is a consistent 'thing' lately and the most important discovery is the role of stock installed sane package. (imo). edit: adding (IMO) to this end part.

How do you connect your computer to the printer/scanner?
Can you give me your output of simple-scan --debug while replicating the problem?

penny-farthing It doesn't look like you try to scan any document from the debug trace. I honestly don't know if this will help solving your problem or I will be able to solve it for you. But if you want to indulge me in this pursuit. Please try these steps :

Uninstall sane-airscan. sudo eopkg rm --purge sane-airscan . Make sure it is not installed.
Make sure sane-backends is installed.
From terminal run simple-scan --debug
Try scan a page with "Single Page" option.
Try scan a page with "All Page from Feeder" option.
Try scan a page with "Multiple Page From Flatbed" option.
Close simple-scan.
Post that log here.
Now, install sane-airscan. Check if there is any other scanner in the dropdown-menu. If there isn't, just select the previous scanner.
Redo Step number 3 until step number 8.
