You could make life easier if you install Gedit as a default application. In the "Other" section of the Default Applications dialog, you could simply replace every occurance of "Mousepad" - there are lots of those - with "Gedit," since they're both text editors. That shouldn't take more than a minute or so. If you've already done that, then nevermind.
A change I made was to create a shortcut for "systemctl hibernate," and assign it to CTRL+H. Now when I'm through with the computer for the day, I can shut it down completely with CTRL+H, and continue the same session the next day.
