If anyone is a glutton they can corroborate a dev tracker bug report I filed this morning.
Flatpak or repo Epiphany (gnome-web) freezes/crashes my XFCE in every modality (terminal or menu icon). That's four hard boots today.
Eolie would not stay launched either. Of 3 browsers I've tried on XFCE, only Firefox works. I was looking for a super light browser but I can't get any to work. (Falkon would bring kwallet and a lot of stuff I don't want to bring into the Beta right now or I'd use it.)

Not much fun with XFCE this afternoon as far as making it a work station but there is always tomorrow. Rebooting into Budgie right now.

Migrated /home from Budgies to Xfce and using it as my daily driver. No blocker until now. For browser, I install Edge manually from their rpm package.

minh how do you install an RPM package on Solus? Is that easier than just getting the Edge flatpak?

I also got the edge Flatpak out of desperation. I'm afraid to walk on the dark side and I will probably never launch it after reading their privacy policy/eula. but it is a snazzy browser. they re-wrote chrome and it's better than chrome. I tried it once.

Edge not what I'd call lightweight by any stretch. firefox, chromium, brave, vivaldi, opera either.

for anyone following my XFCE misadventures I only got 1 out of 3 lightweight browsers to work in XFCE. Carpe Diem!
Yes, the butt-ugly Midori actually works as a lightweight browser. I was whining for a lightwweight browser than didn't wreck XFCE and got it on the third try! Except it's Midori. And it only stays in light theme. And with spell checker enabled it does not spell check.
I should be careful what I wish for🙂.
    At least I didn't wish for Lynx🙁.

Startin to get the rhythm of XFCE. It's Beta for a reasons you might see here and there, but it's mostly complete. It's starting to grow on me.

brent At least I didn't wish for Lynx

I always installed links, on my Free/OpenBSD pcs. links -G is quite simple and satisfying to use, displaying both graphics and text.

elfprince Links and Lynx is a learning curve for sure with its shortcuts (like vim keybindings). I've used it. I liked being able to simply read a story and not worry about any other beacons or cookies etc but to tell you the truth I missed seeing stuff on any webpage.
Not until I saw your response., this moment, did I know there was a graphics prepresentation deal in the cli. that's interesting. am researching the -g command now.

brent how do you install an RPM package on Solus

I do it manually, of course. Just download the rpm package and extract the folders in correct location. I don't like flatpak that require to add extra layers to install edge flatpak. I feel better when using binary package directly, but just my feeling. Don't understand much how flatpak work 🙂

        14 days later

WetGeek I've got XFCE where I could spend two whole days in it including now. I think the Beta-bugs took me longer to dial it in than most. But it's solid.
I threw in the towel on making the panel work to my needs. I tried every variation. So Plank is back in my life, and that's fine. The panel will probably be good for must people's needs though.
I went back to my beloved Gedit instead of Mousepad but the house file manager, pdf reader, terminal, etc are all fine.
It's not Budgie, but Solus did something unique with it and I d0 enjoy working in XFCE.

brent I went back to my beloved Gedit instead of Mousepad

You could make life easier if you install Gedit as a default application. In the "Other" section of the Default Applications dialog, you could simply replace every occurance of "Mousepad" - there are lots of those - with "Gedit," since they're both text editors. That shouldn't take more than a minute or so. If you've already done that, then nevermind.

A change I made was to create a shortcut for "systemctl hibernate," and assign it to CTRL+H. Now when I'm through with the computer for the day, I can shut it down completely with CTRL+H, and continue the same session the next day.

brent Plank is back in my life

Plank entered my life the moment I found out that the panel didn't have - and couldn't have - an icon-only task manager. But Plank could fill that gap quite well. I still use the panel for its Menu, Workspace Switcher, and System Tray, but I don't think I could enjoy using Xfce without Plank.

              WetGeek
I have panel taking up a small bit of real estate in the lower right corner for the stuff I want to see as well.
As I said, I'm delighted where I have it.
Thanks for the tip about the 'Other' section---did not know.

let me ask you for some advice:
I don't know if I'm helping reporting XFCE bugs to the dev tracker or clogging up bandwidth. What's reproducible for me may not always be for someone else.

brent I don't know if I'm helping reporting XFCE bugs to the dev tracker or clogging up bandwidth.

Don't worry about that. If you enter it in the bug tracker, you've taken the first step towards getting it fixed. And if it's not really a bug, or it's already been fixed, it takes a team member just a few seconds to dispose of it as such.

On the other hand, if you don't report it, it may never get the attention of someone who can do something about it. Bandwidth is cheap. Bugs can be very costly, indeed.

WetGeek OK, thanks for the response. I will cease being shy with my concerns. I have a couple things to report. appreciate it.

                  WetGeek

good lord 'others' is a mammoth beast. It changed the Gedits for me. I never set a default word processor. XFCE itself decided to split stuff up in between OnlyOffice and Libre. browser stuff, too, is split. I didn't make these decisions so I don't know if 'other' is guessing behavior or making it up or this is a bug?
                  No complaints, I love exploring.

                  edit:

what fresh hell is this? I have Caja?
                  🙂 it's an adventure!

WetGeek I'm in 3 straight days of XFCE. What is happening to me? I must be in a David Cronenberg movie...
...XFCE is robust for work and pleasure and mucking about in. I've tried a handful of XFCE's and all meh, but this one is growing on me.
..another thing of note: bugs (it's got 'em) don't deter me anymore because I just keep working around them instead of confronting them.

It's my daily driver now. What can I say 😉

minh did you learn to make the panel your own and live with it in peace? or did you break down and install Plank?
                    asking for a friend.

The default and then templates in Panel Profiles are more than enough for me. I rarely hold the mouse to click on an icon in panel, instead set up shortcuts for the apps I use frequently. Also, the shortcuts to snap window to the left, corner or maximize are important. Those are things I use most.

One thing I find not comfortable is the left Win key when it's bind to Whisker menu. Moving from Budgie, I used the left Win + E to open Files Manager. Here it shows the Whisker menu first, then File Manager when I hit this combination. But I could live with it by training myself to other combination, like Ctrl + Alt + E.

Another thing I miss when moving from Budgie is the Win + A to see the calendar and switch Audio sources when I'm in a call, or when to switch from speaker to headset.

For the notification, I find Xfce integrate it better to the apps, or browser. When the notification comes, I could click on it to bring me to the app.

Rather than that, I find Xfce is super smooth, stable, flexible to custom, nothing to complain. I also like the big LCD clock, it catches my eyes when I want to check the time.

minh I also like the big LCD clock, it catches my eyes when I want to check the time.

I got rid of it in panel--I wanted an analog one and plank had a docklet for it.
I love what you did with this panel and you even got your panel icons around the same size as your widgets, something I was not good at.

minh But I could live with it by training myself to other combination, like Ctrl + Alt + E.

exactly how I felt coming from Budgie. retraining some things is no problem. there's a video I posted in another thread with a guy tricking out the Whisker menu (not keybindings thought). that I would like to remake in my own sensibility.

Also--how did (shortcut or other) you bring up Calendar? I could not find one installed and missed the one keystroke to see it in Raven. Or do I need to install gnome-calendar?

minh For the notification, I find Xfce integrate it better to the apps, or browser.

                      me as well.

minh Rather than that, I find Xfce is super smooth, stable, flexible to custom, nothing to complain.

I would have to say the same thing. I had some minor stuff to report, but all in all I got this cool DE to a daily driver and it took me a while.

ps--I have to say this is every part a 'tinkerer's distro' as Plasma. really impressed.

minh But I could live with it by training myself to other combination, like Ctrl + Alt + E.

Interesting. I tried it on a Windows machine, and discovered the difference. On Windows, the menu is bound to the Win key's being released. On Solus, it's bound to the Win key's being pressed. So on Solus, Win+E does display Thunar, but it launches the Whisker menu on the way to doing that.

If you simply train yoursef to press both keys at the same time, you'll get the result you want.

WetGeek On Windows, the menu is bound to the Win key's being released. On Solus, it's bound to the Win key's being pressed

This is the issue. I simply changed the Whisker shortcut to Win + Space, then issue solved. I can use other combination without issue
