XFCE install and Calmares Observations and Questions
brent If I do have to use plank, I will just get rid of the panel altogether.
i really like what Plank does for me - hiding inteligently and exposing itself when needed - but I'm not sure I'd get rid of the panel. There are a lot of features there that are nice to have available in the system tray. And I'm not sure where I'd put the Whisker menu other than where it is. Or the Workspace Switcher.
Are you sure Xfce isn't just a bit too configurable, like Plasm? After all, my Xfce laptop is a virtual carbon-copy of my Plasma laptop.

brent I set pictures for a 4 second delay
If you're taking full-screen captures, I wouldn't expect you to notice any lack of delay. That's not part of the reported bug. It's when you want to select a smaller image - such as the area around a context menu - that it's an issue. When you set a delay, then click to take the shot, then right-click to display the context menu, it's already too late to capture it. The delay you set is ignored, and the shot is taken before you have a chance to select the area and snap it.
To be clear, this happens only for this type of image. If you set a delay and then take a full-screen image, the delay is honored. I don't remember what happens when you set a delay and then select "window under the cursor," I should give that a try, much as I hate mysteries.
The solution to the original problem, of course, is to set a delay, click to take the full-screen picture, open the context menu, and wait for the capture to be done. Then you can use an image manipulation utility (like Gwen for Plasma) to crop that image to the context menu you need. A bit more trouble than it needs to be, but still doable.

I've been configuring XFCE the last 3 hours, now I'm back in Budgie. I DID notice this. I noticed when I select 'select an area' that very thing happened and the selector mouse was cut out once--disappeared. It's a buggy app and I'm inclined to import gnome-screenshot into xfce (unless that is gnome screen shot?)---I could get what I wanted but it took a while.
It's nifty and modest and you are right: it's a plethora of config settings.
I went and fetched a very hardened user.js for firefox from github because I get sick of browser settings. Viv Snapshot will be next.
You know how you said you have it looking identical to Plasma (sans k-packages)? I think we are all inclined to do that even me. While there is no way in he** I could use a stock configuration, I want a different experience except I don't know what it is...
Anyways...I wonder if I could start an 'XFCE Questions' thread that any new xfce user could jump in with questions?
Because if you can't answer this question then I'm afraid I may have to. Here's my question:
Is there any way to get rid of the verbosity in the menu? (that extra sentence after app name I mean)

WetGeek will check that out tonight. I believe that's called their Whisker Menu that is default.
Dig this, I found some dark theme in the stock list (I did install a couple but not that one) called xhcd or something like that. It rounded the corners of my windows. Splendid.
I don't have this near daily use yet (printers, scanner, etc) but I'm grateful I can tinker a little at a time and make the changes that way instead of all at once.
I don't like the stock Thunar settings so next I will spend an hour getting the file manager the way I need it.
The terminal looks and behaves like gnome-terminal. Which is good enough for me.
I like this much more than Mate.

Yep. Those whiskers are on a mouse, you know.

I'm such a fan of Terminology that I usually use the stock terminal app just long enough to do an update and install a few necessities - Micro and Terminology being among those.

Yeah, I never could make myself love MATE. I'm gettin' there with Xfce.

brent I am getting master a setting up budgie put it on 2 laptops
can do it in about 45min..
I had xfce on the problem child for abit didnt mess with it to much might be alittle more learning curve their.
Looked cool and all not what I was expecting tho more refined than normal XFCE.
Mate I could never kill it always worked was its biggest attributes. still running 2 computers with it
use them everyday.
Done ramblin.
Note I leave on mate comp on all the time with ftp server instead of plugging usb stick in and recopying
I just use the ftp and no matter what machine I am on can grab files.
Left it running a month last time before it got turned off..lol
Axios Mate I could never kill it always worked was its biggest attributes.
I agree. It was bulletproof. But Mate as your Server distro makes perfect sense to me.
And XFCE, to me, definitely has a learning curve. It does a few things different--a strange bird in a good way. Not everything is centralized but you get the rhythm of it.
Whether XFCE gets that bulletproof reputation we will see, it's early. Sure it will.
Sorry you had to go back to WIN on the problem child.
WetGeek Yeah, I never could make myself love MATE. I'm gettin' there with Xfce.
yeah it's like that

" just long enough to do an update and install a few necessities" me too with some stock apps for sure

gnome-screenshot is on top. that works better for me.
gotta get rid of/remove from menu the xfce-screenshot. how? eopkg hopefully without breaking deps.
still to do: find and install more thunar plugins. It's funny like Nemo with the cool stuff.
I have NO PRIVACY settings dialed in yet and Redshift is the same as Budgie: "GEOCLUE HAS NO ACCESS TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD SO SCREW YOU AND YOUR NIGHTLIGHT." --this was BEFORE I installed UFW...
What can I do for a screenshifter dimmer.? Appending their .conf file to every known internet example, even with manual longitude, latitude, and gamma settings did nothing (even on Budgie)...too bright right now.
XFCE so clever: budgie wallpaper included!
still playing with panel...lots of settings. day by day. if all else fails Plank but I want to try to make it work.
that blue rectangle blob on the bottom almost near the end is some kind of panel window control where you can shuffle stuff in real time but I can't figure it out. yet, I will.
just firefox and epiphany right now. just installed UFW.
spent time with Thunar. I like it better. Next: look at SC and see what I can add to Thunar.
So far: I got rid of one XFCE app which is screenshot.
I like XFCE everything else including terminal.
this I have to figure out:
The first two terminal entries are the same terminal (xfce-terminal
). Got to get rid of one entry.
Wekgeek mentioned a menu editor but I don't know what it is and haven't seen/looked for it.
It's an attractive DE, I'm grateful to explore it little by little.

I have not tried this version yet but have a preemptive question! On all my machines I always get some screen tearing on XFCE so tend to use Plasma or Budgie to save time and problem solving on this issue. Does this version have any built in short cuts for overcoming screen tearing? I like XFCE because it is fast and lightweight and I have some old laptops that would maybe benefit from moving to this version. Solus is always reliable for me and if Plasma is anything to go by, as Solus plasma is superb and very lightweight compared to other KDE Distro's. I will have to find time to try this XFCE version out, it certainly looks good from the feedback so far!

DJSupertel As far as I know the XFCE edition uses the standard XFCE compositor, so I guess the best bet is to try a live USB and see if it has tearing issues on your hardware.

WetGeek They installed gnome-screenshot to replace xfce-screenshot, but they haven't removed the menu entry for xfce-screenshot.
The first two terminal entries are the same terminal (xfce-terminal). Got to get rid of one entry.
They are different entries. The first one points to the default terminal of the system and the second one points specifically to xfce-terminal.
WetGeek What is your image of? In the Whisker menu on my system, there's only one Screenshot entry. Have you installed some other plugins or other additional software?
like stalebrim said, I am replacing the xfce-screenshot and didn't remove it yet.
PS---speaking of plugins, I've seen Thunar and even Whisker I think have some nice ones when I perused software center. to come. gotta work in budgie most of the day so won't be back to XFCE til tonight.

brent Yeah. The entry points to your default terminal, which is xfce-terminal.

Understood. It didn't occur to me to install the GNOME version, but I've now done that. It's UI is very crude, compared to Xfce's but the delayed screenshot for a selected area works well. I'll keep that installed on my Xfce laptop until there's a fix available for the Xfce version. Thanks for helping with this issue.
Now ... if you just had a solution for the Bluetooth/keyboard issue I'm having, I'd be extremely happy!
