Hi there, is someone using the current version of Web (45.0) and has also problems with "some" websites?
I'm using an uptodate Solus 4.4 Budgie, Web is from the Solus Software Center. When I use Web on certain websites it looks like the website would be flicker when I scroll up/down. But the whole website window just get's black for 5 seconds after some scrolling until the website is loading/render again correctly when I do nothing. Do I start scrolling again "flicker" or the the window get's directly black again.

I also tested the flatpak, the snap and canary version. The current snap, flatpak and canary version didn't even render(?) any website when Web launches. I can hover over links and see that the cursor is changing but thats all, except the menu bar it's all black. I also tested the technology preview. This one acting like the stable from the Software Center.

Example Proton DB

Firefox runs with no problems, so it's some webkit conflict?

EDIT
Ok, in this part of the forum it happens to, even while I edit the text or move the mouse. Strange.

  • I loveWeb, I give it a chance every year, but some non-rendering is not unusual. Even it's flatpak version had rendering hiccups like your pictures show.
Even in different distros it was consistent in its inconsistency.
It's for that reason I can't keep it in my browser rotation: I could never depend on it.
If you are a longtime user and this behavior has just started, then I'd be really surprised.

That said I never knew why it was that way, just that it was that way. I wonder if running it in the terminal would show any clues?

Nah just gave it a try. I'm never was a fan of Firefox and Epiphany had something. Use atm LibreWolf but I will try Vivaldi. It was my main Browser on Windows too.

Excellent choice. I use it everywhere, on all my Solus machines and my one Windows computer that streams content to our TV. I love the named tab stacks.

Phiqu I guess I get bored easy, I couldn't say why...I keep three dependable browsers around. Librewolf is one of them and fantastic, keep it. Vivaldi will be fun, too and it sounds like you know it very well. I like a Chromium knockoff and FF and a FF-knockoff personally.

"Epiphany had something."---it's a very special browser. It has that "something" for sure.
Of the weird inbred gnome browsers (Epiphany, Eolie, Midori) only Web stands above. The rendering thing AFAIR is a cross between library compatibilities (webkit?), modernization, and lack of consistent upkeeping. This is really "a could have been something special light browser" and I've found nothing light to take it's place.
Falkon is quick and light and unattractive to my eyes, and the other two 'inbreds' don't really lack in features (they are light) but they lack in performance including rendering, font rendering, anything resembling consistency, etc.

Flatpak has a plethora of 'light' browsers (surf, otter, other stuff I forgot) but some don't even work. Agree with you on Epiphany though. I hate the Google/FF monopoly on browsers so Epiphany is kind of heartbreaking because it's not a day-in/day-out viable alternative right now.

      20 days later

Mhmm maybe the problem wasn't Epiphany. After this Webkit update today, the browser dosen't act strange anymore. Atleast the outdated 45 version from the Solus Software Center.

      a month later

Yesterday they released the GNOME Web 45.2 Flatpak. This one runs much better than the 45 and 45.1 Version. No blank websites, the flickering is mostly gone but still there, just not that extreme like in the old versions.

Was hoping, that the 45.2 will finally run now perfectly and I can use Web as main browser but meh -.-

The Version 45 from the Solus Software Center is still the best with none of mentioned problems, just outdated. (update request done)

thanks for that info. I will wait for Solus to update Epiphany then. It's hard to find a good ultralight browser these days. I love Epiphany bu it's always had site-rendering problems.
