Since reinstalling Plasma on my laptop recently, I've been rebuilding my collection of Thunderbird message filters. Prior to the upgrade to 102, that meant selecting Message from the Thunderbird menu, and then selecting Create Filter from Message. That would open a dialog that was partially populated with the properties of the selected message, so one could create a filter specific to that message.

Since the upgrade to 102, I've been looking for the new location of that Message menu item, and cannot find it anywhere. I've tried using Help to find it, but that only launches the message filter creation dialog without populating it with the current message's properties. In other words, no From information is filled in.

So, my inbox is getting quite a collection of messages for which I used to have filters, but can no longer create one. Has anyone found out how to do this in 102 yet?

  • In an open e-mail, right-click on the sender's address or on the subject of the message. I don't know if this is what you mean.

    I suppose you want to speak about the new version v.115 of Thunderbird.
    So, have you verified that the file ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default-release/Mail/(adress server pop of your FAI)/msgFilterRules.dat (or ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default-release/ImapMail/imap.serveur.com/msgFilterRules.dat) is present and contain your own rules ?

      Yeah, doin' too many things at the same time. As far as I can see, there are no rules in that folder.

      Does that mean I need to start all over again already? And without being able to create a filter for a message, how can I even do that?

        For my case, I have tested this feature in the past and found in this file the parameters I had defined at the time for a transmitter.
        I did a test with the new version of Thunderbird by creating a new filter on the same model as before. After closing Thunderbird, I went to see in Nemo the state of the msgFilterRules.dat file and after refreshing it, I found the new rule created above the one created previously.
        It looks like this (of course some personal data has been changed):

        version="9"
        logging="no"
        name="From is: marketing@xxxxx.co"
        enabled="yes"
        type="17"
        action="Move to folder"
        actionValue="mailbox://nobody@Local%20Folders/FolderB"
        condition="AND (from,is,marketing@xxxxx.co)"
        name="From is: user.emet1@email.fr"
        enabled="yes"
        type="17"
        action="Move to folder"
        actionValue="mailbox://user.dest%40fai.fr@pop.fai.fr/Junk"
        condition="AND (from,is,user.emet1@email.fr)"

        To create a filter, go to the Messages menu, then Create a filter from the message...

        So to answer to your question, given the state of your msgFilterRules.dat file, I would be tempted to advise you to recreate your message filters.

        If someone has a better idea... thanks in advance.

          penny-farthing To create a filter, go to the Messages menu, then Create a filter from the message...

          Yeah, that's what I did in the previous version. The problem here is that I can't find any Messages menu. So no Create a Filter from the message ....

          All I did was the last update. I didn't play with any settings, or change anything in my profile. My folders are still here, of course, because it's an IMAP account, and those are stored on the server.

          If I select Tools->Message filters, they're all there. So I found the second msgFilterRules.dat, and thought it was the one you were referring to, but apparently there are more of those somewhere. I've since noticed that there are new messages in some folders that couldn't be where they are unless a filter put 'em there.

          So, whew ... that was close. I'm glad I still have all my existing filters -- wherever they are -- but I'm still at a loss to create any new ones based on a particular message. Any good suggestions would be appreciated. Has anyone else been able to do this since the recent upgrade? If so, could you please tell me where to look for the menu that contains a Message item that points to another item to create a filter based on that selected message?

          I know where that used to be -- I've used it hundreds of times over the years -- but I can't find it in this version.

            WetGeek apparently there are more of those somewhere

            Indeed there are. I did some more exploring and found the link to:

            That contained data for the three accounts I use most (the > Mail example you used just referenced the Comics feed and Local Folders). So There's no mystery about how my filters could still be working, but I'm still at a loss for creating a new filter based on a message. Any help still appreciated very much, thanks!

                I think it's probably a menu display problem in Thunderbird that explains your deadlock.

                I have taken the Solus installation image in English to explain precisely how to proceed.
                In Thunderbird, press the F10 key, the application menu will appear. To keep it permanently displayed, go to the View menu, then the Toolbars sub-menu and check Menu Bar.
                The Message menu is between the Go and Tools menus. And in the Message menu, you will find the Create Filter From Message... submenu, which should solve your problem.

                Alternatively, right-click next to the search engine and select Menu bar 😀

                pomon In an open e-mail, right-click on the sender's address or on the subject of the message.

                Yes!

                Thank you! I'm sure it would have taken me a long time to figure that out. Now that I know, I think it was a big improvement over the old method.
