No icons visible in Nemo right click context menu

Yamon2 nemo in budgie arch endeavour has no nemo context menu either. I've never seen that 'show icons on buttons' slider/menus in budgie-desktop-settings. As far as OP goes I'm wondering what about gnome-control-center, or a true hail mary, dconf..that said in nemo preferences there is an entire adjustment menu for Context Menus....
...now I wonder if this just all theming issues?

Actually, the option to turn the context menu icons on or off is in the "Settings" section of the Linux Mint "Themes" app, which is located in the "System Settings" folder. When you turn off the option, the icons in the Nemo context menus don't show.

My guess is that the option to turn on or off the context menu icons in Mint's implementation of Nemo is a feature of Mint's quite elaborate theming system rather than a feature of Nemo itself. The on/off switch is not actually in the Nemo preferences menu.

It looks like you should be able to change this with gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.interface menus-have-icons true and relogging. Changing the setting without relogging doesn't do anything for me, but I don't know if that has to do with Nemo staying in the background or whatever it does; plugins are the same way.

EbonJaeger Okay I have menus-have-icons set to true and double checked by running:

org.cinnamon.desktop.interface menus-have-icons true
org.cinnamon.desktop.interface menus-have-tearoff false
org.gnome.desktop.interface menus-have-tearoff false

But I still don't see the context menu icons. It's such a hinderance on usability. I really hope this issue gets solved.

EbonJaeger Linux Mint has three menus-have-icons gsettings:

gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.interface menus-have-icons true
gsettings set org.mate.desktop.interface menus-have-icons true
gsettings set org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings menus-have-icons true

Maybe I need to add one of those missing settings but my try ends in the following error:

sudo gsettings set org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings menus-have-icons true
No such schema “org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings”

Same problem here with Nemo on Solus, no icons.
When I use Nemo on Debian 11 bullseye, context menu icons show up correctly, just out of the box. org.cinnamon.settings-daemon doesn't exist there at all.

On my Debian system I created a few right-click actions in ~/.local/share/nemo/actions and it seems that only icons located in /usr/share/icons/Papirus will show up in the context menu (though I seem to be using the Papirus-Dark theme). Turns out I can use any icon from any theme in /usr/share/icons/.

On my Solus systems the globally used icon theme is set to Papirus, the Widgets to Plata-Compact. Those are settings identical to what I see in org.gnome.desktop.interface, so I assume those are actually in effect. But that settings path does not contain a setting menus-have-icons...

Could it be a Gnome problem?

Hm, that's gonna be a problem. It's a part of cinnamon-settings-daemon and I really don't want to include all of that when all that might be needed is a single schema file, and patching the build system to only do that one file of the entire project seems a bit silly.

I did some experimenting on Linux Mint. It was this one single setting that changed the icon visibility on nemo on that operating system:

gsettings set org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings menus-have-icons true

I guess the icon invisibility issue doesn't solve by simply adding a few *gchema.xlm files under /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ but one would need to install a cinnamon-settings-daemon as well.

Could it be possbile to slightly alter Nemo source code and build a custom version for myself? Or find another work around?

Interestingly, it makes no difference if menus-have-icons is set to true or false, the icons are always present in the context menus (even after logging out/in).

Yannnd Interesting. Gives me hope, that maybe a fork of Nemo can be found - One that doesn't require that cumbersome settings daemon.

I ran into the same problem on Arch Linux. I was able to solve it by adding:

[Settings]
gtk-menu-images=true

to the ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini (or to the /usr/share/gtk-3.0/settings.ini if you want this for all users). After that, Nemo has to be restarted.

Nikolai2038 Thanks for putting some life into this issue again.

I tried to create both settings.ini files, but nothing changed after restarting Nemo.

Triggered by your response I started a new search and this time I stumbled upon an issue at askubuntu.com: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1318002/why-are-all-button-and-menu-icons-gone.

I tried the command from the first answer in this issue:
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides "{'Gtk/ButtonImages': <1>, 'Gtk/MenuImages': <1>}"
and to my great satisfaction after a restart Nemo now shows all desired icons! I could reproduce it at a few other Solus installs, so it seems quite consistent.

I also discovered that already many years ago a long discussion has taken place about the removal of this setting from org.gnome and that it has been removed deliberately because of the (often criticized) philosphy of our Gnome developer friends 😏 . So I'm not sure about how long this will keep working, but for now I'm happy with it.
