Whenever I refill the bird feeders in the back yard, I also toss a few cups of sunflower seeds on the ground for the little ground-dwelling birds that prefer eating there, and I spread some peanuts on the ground for the squirrels and Steller's jays.
I've known for a long time that the Steller's jays have an interesting habit of picking up a peanut, and if it doesn't weight enough to suit them, they put it down, pick up another, and try it. After passing up several peanuts, they eventually find one they like, and fly off into our woods to consume it there. This is well documented behavior for jays that I didn't know about until I saw them doing that here.
This morning I looked out the kitchen window and noticed one of our mutant teen-age ninja squirrels pick up a peanut, drop it, then pick up another peanut, drop it, and finally pick up yet another and eat that one.
