I've been using Proxmox for about 2 years now on a custom server I built (AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 48GB RAM, 4GB Radeon RX-570, 1.25TB NVME, 8TB HDD, Dual 256GB SATA HDD)
The main thing I like about using it is the ability to run containers and virtual machines both. I've done TrueNAS in a VM and a bunch of stuff in containers. It's nice as everything is done via a web interface.
Right now, I'm running the following with <5% CPU usage on average:
- Omada Server for my TP-Link equipment
- PiHole DNS Proxy (Helps fight ads)
- Hiccup (Basic web dashboard)
- Whoogle (Proxy to Google without tracking)
- MeshCentral (for managing remote servers)
- CasaOS (Simple docker system for a few I run)
- AgentDVR (Recording of 5 IP Cameras, was recording 8 cameras)
- Cloudflared (Free Reverse Proxy with security and protection)
There's a lot you can do with it. I've ran Solus and a few other distros plus Windows all in VMs on it before. I even found a group of developers on GitHub who write install scripts for some of the most popular open source self hosted stuff for use with Proxmox.
I could write a lot about it but this thread is already going off topic. 🙂
