Kinoite, addendum
On X11 now, and it's nice to be able to use the VM at full-screen for a change. I notice several things now that I didn't before, and I've figured out why the Games category wasn't added to my menu. Apparently I wasn't paying enough attention before to this response to the flatpak command to install aisleriot and kshisen when I gave it the final "Y" response:
So, the process ended in failure and I didn't notice. I went on to the next task assuming that I'd installed those two games, and would configure them later. Now that I've had a few hours of sleep, what I hadn't noticed before is now obvious. I know that the VM is connected to the Internet at this point; it simply refused to accept the flatpaks, and I have no idea why.
Then, there was the problem of the total lockup of the VM and its host when I tried to install the Lastpass add-on to Firefox. Because getting control of the system again requires an impolite shutdown, I don't dare try that here without first saving this message. I'll post it now, so if another such lockup occurs, it won't be lost.
EDIT: Before I could try adding Lastpass, when I first launched Firefox, I got this error:
This is probably something that's to be expected when restarting Firefox under X11 when it had been previously used on Wayland. I just wanted to document it before I take the chance of locking up everything by adding Lastpass to firefox.
...
MORE EDIT: Yep, my worst expctations were met. That attempt resulted in a total lockup of both the VM and its host. This time my wife wasn't in the same room watching a movie, so I could hear that the fans in the laptop host were running at full speed while I was able to do nothing with the machine. That's one more problem found with the host on Wayland that also exists with the host on X11.
It occurred to me that, throughout this ordeal, the VM had been using Wayland by defalt. Well, it's a KDE desktop, after all. I wondered what might happen if I changed that to X11, on the VM as well as on the host. So I've done that now, and I'll post this one more time before trying anything that might cause yet another lockup.
YET ANOTHER EDIT: This time I was rewarded with success. With the host machine on X11 and the VM on X11, everything ran smoothly, including the installation of the Lastpass add-on into Firefox:
Also, as I expected, toggling the VM back and forth between full-screen and using just the host's client area was completely uneventful. So if anyone reading this intends to repeat this experiment with a VM, be sure to keep in mind that both the VM and the host need to be using X11 in order to avoid the total lockups I've experienced.
Although I'm happy to have solved that mystery of the conflicting window managers, I have no expectation that I'll be able to install any flatpak packages that I was unable to install before. Since I also don't expect any more lockups with this system, I'll try installing those two games one more time before I give up on Kinoite altogether.
I'm amazed, but this time aisleriot installs without a whimper of a complaint, and the Games submenu is created.
Unfortunately, kshisen was not installed. The error said something about a broken pipe. And, of course, I didn't even try to install Vivaldi after Tom confirmed that there is no flatpak version of that available. Apparently the same goes for neofetch, but I thought I'd give that one more try before I gave up on it.
FINAL CONCLUSION
This has indeed turned out to be one of an "Other Interesting Distros," and although it's been a lot of work, I've enjoyed it very much. I really mean that. But at this time, I need to re-evaluate my opinion of Kinoite and conclude that, in its current condition, it's probably not a distro that I can use in the way I would like to. As time goes on I fully expect improvements that might change my mind once again. More software will probably become available in flatpaks, I'd imagine, so that would resolve some of the problems I've experienced.
I'm especially excited about the prospect of an immutable version of the Solus editions. Since they should be using moss packages instead of flatpaks, I would expect all the software that's now available in the Solus repository to be available in the moss repository. That would suit me perfectly for a daily driver.
Installing the current version of Kinoite on hardware instead of a VM would certainly resolve the conflicts between X11 and Wayland, and I do have a spare laptop I could use for such an experiment. However, that would involve a lot more work, and if it still didn't serve my needs as a daily driver because of the flatpak issues, the effort would have been for nothing. And I'd want to re-install Solus on the spare laptop. I strongly suspect that would be the case, so now I'm going to end this experiment -- for real, this time -- and plan to revisit Kionite sometime in the future. Maybe when immutable OSs have become more of a thing.
