Brave flatpak vs shipped binary

Hey, you brilliant browser nerds, I have a question.

During Solus hiccup, I installed flatpak Brave for security reasons. After some time using it, I noticed that the flatpak and the shipped binaries behave differently. Flatpak runs smoother and uses bout 20% more gpu processing (in NVtop), and the binary one uses less gpu but is less smooth.

The flatpak experience is slightly more comfortable. Both browsers are synced, so they both have the exact same extensions.

Anyone else noticed this?

yeah flatpaks vs native curated is a tradeoff. Your smoother vs. less gpu correlation is kinda moot because no matter the circumstances, there is always a tradeoff of some kind.
Consider:
I hate flatpak browsers because they are sandboxed and are mostly without spellcheck even brave as I recall.
I love flatpak browsers because I'm not always satisfied with our curated selection.
Not a contradiction to me🙂.
My own personal rule (I have no idea if its sensible) is I never have a flatpak of an app we have in our repo. I'd rather our team put the bandaids on the package instead of flatpak update (I know you didn't have that luxury during the Great Outage🙂).

lf-araujo Brave can get that way if you have low memory and the memory save feature is turned on.
Plus if memory is issue and you have to many tabs open.
Brave seems not to like low memory where firefox handles it better most time with no issues.
(Just things I found out)
Not sure why flatpak and repo would make any difference.

What type of hardware do you have, it would be helpful for comparison. On my Ryzen 3 3200 laptop, I see no real difference in the Flatpak app or the native eopkg as far as CPU vs. GPU usage when all settings are the same. Since you're using NVtop, I'm going to also assume you have an Nvidia 10xx 16xx 20xx or 30xx card. Are you using hybrid graphics mode or full GPU? Is hardware acceleration enabled in both versions?
