I'm not saying this because it's my favorite DE, but I've used KDE Plasma for years, and never suffered any of the indignities you've suffered with Budgie. And it's very configurable, very smooth to use, and according to my Solus VMs it's very nearly as "lean" as MATE is.

As long as you're experimenting, why not give Plasma a try for a while? You might learn that it's hard to find anything you need to fix there. The idea that anyone needs to be some kind of an "expert" in order to use Plasma is an unfortunate myth. Just a shovel full of horse pucky.

I would never try to get a stranger to try a different DE, but although you may be a bit strange, I consider you a friend. You're way more of an expert than you need to be to use Plasma.

I agree 100%. I just can't figure out what that has to do with my message that you replied to. Are you just pointing out that you have experience with a number of DEs? If so, I definitely approve.

brent I think you'll quite enjoy Plasma once you get used to it. The menus and settings are a lot at first, especially compared to something "minimal" like XFCE or Mate. The benefit is you can customize almost every thing to look and behave to what fits you best.
Side note, before all of the akonadi and pim integrations, autostart apps, and things like that I have running, Plasma was running right around 760mb of RAM and about 2-5% CPU usage on my Lenovo IdeaPad. Of course, after I've added all my "convenience" bloat, it's about 1.2gb of RAM and 5-8% CPU usage before any browsers or other non autostart apps are running.

Brucehankins : WetGeek I probably need to talk to a shrink but here goes🙂. I've tried Plas before in different DEs. There's nothing wrong with it. It's has nice fluid way about it and it's elegant. I never hated it. I should be using it but...
...you know how when you go to a place to eat and it's your meal, your experience, the whole thing from beginning to end was such traumatic offensive horror?
That's where my open prejeduice (and wink wink harmless jesting) about KDE comes from. In my linux training wheels period, with budgie mostly, I enjoyed trying out all the delicious and wonderful kde apps.
No one had warned me that kde and gnome and gtk reacted negatively to each other in many (not most) circumstances. In other words K-packages had actually damaged my system/experience. And since then I've never gone back to the restaurant.
I'll get over it. I'm not that crazy.

Mate is working like a champ on lenovo will get it setup over time.
I may think about budgie again when new iso's come out.

Axios try budgie when the new isos come. when its Nemo OOTB (it has to be going forward) you will have a different experience. this is pretty flawless for me now--first time in a long long time. Of course I haven't tore it up yet🙂. trust me not activating nautilus in any way shape or form has made a difference for me
(side note---I know what you are saying about ungoogled appimage now. I don't get the crashes but it's glitchy and doesn't load right between tab to tab. deleting characters leaves some characters. it's weird to backspace and it misses letters...I want to try the DIY build.)

When I upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 LTS, I finally took the plunge and switched from the i3 window manager on X11 to Sway, an almost drop-in Wayland replacement. Here's my experience of the transition.

Tiling window managers are not for the faint of heart. On top of that, Wayland and Sway are newer technologies than X11 and i3, and in my experience less likely to just work™. But for those of you who:

1) Already have a keyboard-driven workflow, or want to switch to one,
2) Want to be able to customize your desktop environment and workflow endlessly (in both senses of the word), and
3) Aren't afraid of building (most) packages from source
… this article might make the switch from i3 to Sway slightly quicker and more pleasant!"

It's the sheer Polar Exepedition mentality where no men (etc) have ever gone before that keeps me loving unix/linux and keeps me learning/exploring.

Nothing to report on mate chugging along no problems I would have never thought anything
would run on this lenovo ideapad without issues but mate does.
(600 updates 1.4gig not a single hiccup)
I have plenty of laptops to use for budgie and test when the new iso comes out kinda curious to see
what it will be like. (Lots of turmoil with everything it needs time now to settle out and stabilize
and developers smash the bugs)
I hope Mate will be a long time current kept DE for solus. (As with the other Solus DE too.)
And I want to thank the Solus Group for all the amazing things they are doing and there
accomplishments.
