hdansin Well, tried a third cord and it worked. Wonder why they are so finicky? It charges with the one, but doesn't transfer data over it.
I run into this from time to time, trying to use a charging cable rather than a data cable. Data cables have four wires (positive, negative, data send, data receive). Charging cables only have two (positive, negative). I can sometimes tell them apart because some manufacturers use white plastic rather than black (USB2) or blue (USB3) on the USB-A side, but that's not universal. The cables that are packaged with devices are usually charging cables.
hdansin Still can't get my Amazon account on it though.
The only possibility that I can think of is that the Kindle was at one point registered to a different account and isn't deregistered from that account, so Amazon links the device to the other account. A friend ran into that issue when trying to register her late father's Kindle. Long shot, but maybe.
