Ultramarine 37 Budgie - A Quick Look
Ultramarine was one of the first non-Solus Budgie implementations, back when such things were both new and rare. Back then, it was based on Fedora 36, and an early version of Budgie. Now, much later, Ultramarine is based on Fedora 37, and I'm expecting it to be a later version of Budgie, so I wanted to take a quick look to see how things have progressed. I will configure it as much like the Fedora 36 version as I can, and remark appropriately.
To that end, I have done the following:
- Opened the Budgie Desktop Settings and configured this edition like the previous one.
- Configured the terminal to enlarge the text (HD monitor) and create a blinking underline cursor.
- Used dnf to do an update. Although this release is from Dec. 30, there were still 36 packages upgraded.
- Looked through the Budgie Control Center to see whether any more setting changes are needed.
- Changed that silly background to my favorite Ultramarine mountain lake scene.
- Used "Files" (Nautilus?) to access my NAS and fetch two files I use for configuring distros.
Given the current drama concerning Nautilus on Solus Budgie, I thought I should mention that "Files" on this distro is excellent. I'll try to figure out what it really is, because I don't recognize it offhand. It's either something I've never seen before, or a dramatic new version of something that I have. It immediately found my NAS and gave me full access to it as Anonimous. (DiskStation415 in the below image.)
- Modified /etc/fstab and mounted my NAS shares, installed my bashrcAdditions macros in the terminal.
- After the failure with Ultramarine Plasma, I created a symlink to /home only for Videos. It also failed.
- Installed Vivaldi and Thunderbird, and configured both. Installed my three favorite solitaire games.
CONCLUSION
This version of Ultramarine Budgie is every bit as good as its predecessor. Since I've made it clear how much I like it, and have maintained a VM for it, I'll try to restrain my eloquence on the subject, but I will go so far as to say that I'll be deleting my Fedora 36 version and replacing it with this new Fedora 37 version.
