Debian 11.5.0 - Observations, cont.
I've begun configuring this distro, and I thought I'd start this post with the above image from the Plasma system settings. Keep in mind that the Hardware section simply depicts my laptop, since it's the host of these VMs.
If you do use VirtualBox to explore this distro yourself, be aware that the default VMSVGA video support will only give you options for 4x3 and 16x10 displays, and as I noted in my first post, the display won't enlarge itself as you enlarge the VM window. Instead of the default, select the newer VBoxSVGA setting. Then your image will fit a full HD screen (16x9) and the image will adjust itself as you enlarge the VM window.
As usual, I started configuring by running through the system settings, changing a few of them from their defaults, and created eight virtual workspaces. Then I edited the bottom panel to display and center the workspace switcher. Taking the VM to full-screen, and adding those workspaces makes my time spent with this VM more efficient and easier to work with.
With that done, here's the way it looks now, and will look for quite a while now. I've confitured Konsole with a new profile, enlarging the text a bit, and changing to a blinking underline cursor. I was unable to use apt to install neofetch, as I wasn't on the list of sudo users, but I quickly realized that the installer had asked for a root password, so it was not a problem after all. To me it makes sense for the one who installs an OS to have admin access.
The only quibble I have with Debian so far is that I wasn't able to install the VirtualBox guest additions, so I was unable to make the VM and its host share their clipboards. But since the newer video support allows me to work at full HD, and the VM and its host are both connected to the same NAS, that's a minor issue. And it's an issue that won't affect anyone who's not using VirtualBox to create a VM like this.
My first impression of Debian's implementation of KDE Plasma is that it's quite complete and well done. If all the other DEs that the installer supports are just as good, there will be a lot of happy users who are quite satisfied with them. If I find anything to change my opinion later on, I'll certainly mention it in a subsequent post.
