You may also be right. And I've learned more about the VirtualBox video "cards," which probably explains why my first experience with Darkstar ended with a black screen. Sometimes both VMSVGA and VBoxSVGA work with a given distro, usually with one working better than the other. More often one will work, and the other won't.
I don't remember everything about that Darkstar experience, but looking back on it, I probably should have tried whatever video support I didn't use at first when the screen turned black and I couldn't do anything else. I've had to do that with other distros, and don't know why it didn't occur to me at that time.
Now I'm even more curious. I'm going to download a fresh .ISO file for Darkstar, and then try both video options if I need to. I'll be sure to check whether the guest additions are already pre-installed. The VM should adjust itself when I enlarge the VirtualBox window, so it's easy to check.
