Blender HIP doesn't work

Hi.

I've been using Solus Plasma the past weeks with little to no issues at all, so far it's been a great distro to daily drive. However, I have one persisting issue that I haven't managed to solve as of yet. I use Blender from time to time for 3D modelling (the Steam version), and I simply couldn't get it to detect my RX 6600 for HIP rendering, despite having a compatible GPU and a fully updated system.
Do you have any ideas as to how I could fix this?

Download Blender from the site. In the repository, Blender is built without 3D acceleration support.

There’s also a big new feature for Linux users in Blender 3.2, namely AMD GPU rendering support for RDNA and RDNA2 family of AMD Radeon graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 series, as well as Radeon Pro W6000 series. This feature requires the AMD Radeon 22.10 graphics driver to be installed on your GNU/Linux distribution.

Unfortunately, I can't help you on how to install the correct driver.

@JacekJagosz perhaps you can answer this one? I don't recall whether you got HIP fully functional when building the ROCm stack.

infinitymdm So, I packaged ROCm stack for Solus a while ago already, it even got accepted, and most of it got into the repos.

But the OpenCL and HIP packages are not yet in the repos because they couldn't be build on the buildserver, because the buildserver is using old version of solbuild.

So, HIP should be fully functional, but it will get into the repos only when @DataDrake will have some time to update the build server.

And it SHOULD be all that is needed to get Blender working. But I can't know for sure, the Blender version in the repos was too old to support it, so I haven't tested it.

Good news! rocm-opencl and rocm-hip just got into the repos! They are still in unstable, so you either need to wait for the next Friday Sync, or switch to that repository. It is likely some more work will need to be done for blender to work with it, but it needs to be checked.
And big thanks to Gavin and Joey for their work on fixing -hip package.

Beyond I believe you'll have to wait for Blender to be updated now that the ROCm stack is available. It's a work in progress, but we're getting there.

sammypanda The situation is still the same, Blender needs to get updated. I have used HIP recently and it is working well, so I hope Blender will work too, but someone would need to update it, and it is a ton of work.
Then there might be a few tweaks necessary for blender to work with HIP, but I could do those. But I definitely don't have time to update whole blender.

Just a heads up, @GZGavinZhao and me managed to update to ROCm 5.3.3 and now official Blender binaries work with HIP on Solus, and the performance is really good.
There compatibility for Vega, Rdna 1 and 2, I think 3 would need even newer ROCm and thus will only come when we will update to LLVM 16, but maybe it will work already, needs testing.
We haven't figured out how to make Blender from the Solus repo to work with hip yet either, but anyways, you can use Blender on Solus with AMD GPU acceleration. Have fun!
Just install rocm-hip from the repository, download Blender for Linux from https://www.blender.org/download/, unpack it, launch it and go into its settings, choose your GPU under HIP, and voila!
