Is "Edited" really necessary?

Every time I edit a post I've made in order to fix a simple typo, the message is marked with "Edited." It's a minor annoyance, as none of us is perfect, and we sometimes need to make such innocent corrections after we read the posted results.

I've noticed that other forums that are similar to ours do not do that, so it occcurs to me that it may be optional. When I fix a typo in a message on the Vivaldi forum, no such tag is added to it.

The only reason I could think of for doing that is so that the meaning of a message can't be changed after someone else has replied to it. But that's already impossible. After someone else has accessed a message I've written, I can no longer save any changes to it.

So, if it's a feature that can be turned off, and it serves absolutely no purpose, why have it? If it's not a setting that can be turned off, then so be it. I'll sit down and shut up.

I'll bet every comment I write is marked "Edited" because (1) English is not my first language, so I use English oddly at times and go back to correct the oddities, (2) my typing sucks, and (3) auto-spell is even dumber than I am. So I post, look at it, and edit.

The only thing hurt by having an "Edited" tag attached to my posts is that other people might get the impression that I don't get it right the first time and have to edit my posts. Oh, my wounded pride!

WetGeek I don't see any reason for removing that functionality. It simply shows that a message has been edited. There's no value judgement there.

Also, as kyrios has so elegantly demonstrated, it can be quite useful to have a little notice that the message isn't in its original state 😀

That what I ment by "minor annoyance." It's not like a "My Pillow" commercial. If it served any useful purpose, I wouldn't even have borught up the subject, but, of course, it serves no purpose at all.

I think it is useful. More useful would be 1 of 2 options, edited for clarity & edited for content

Well if you develop a Flarum extension for this with some kind of AI that automatically detect the edit type and it is accepted by upstream, we might consider installing it 😛

No need. The "Edited" tag only lets the original poster know that he's edited his post, which he already knows anyway. Anyone else (except moderators) accessing the post makes it impossible for the original poster to edit his message. So, as I wrote, totally useless in the absence of a sinister moderator. And in that case, we have more important worries than an "Edited" tag.

WetGeek again this is because on this forum we do allow editing until next reply. Some other forums do not put restriction on editing so it can be done any time (then edited becomes very important). The devs are not going to build a gas factory with settings that behave differently because of some other settings. This would just add useless complexity thus harder code maintenance (and higher risk of bugs) and confusion for everyone.
