Problem with Virtualbox since last kernel update ?

786psi Interesting. Seems to be caused by a change introduced in kernel version 5.15.44.

So apparently this has been fixed in VirtualBox, but no new release yet. Unfortunately I'm not 100% on what the proper patch would be. The patches floating around seem to be focused on systems with kernel 5.18. Will take another look tomorrow.

786psi Ok. I hope this is the issue I see on both machines and that a fix is available soon.

I also found this here on the Arch Linux forum. And it describes my problem pretty much. I also did not see the problem on my VMs with Win7 and WinXP (and these VM I used every day in the time I recognized the unstable Win10 VM).

In the meantime I switched temporary to VMWare on one machine (Intel) and virt-manager on the other (AMD). Both solutions are working so far and I could use more or less copies of the VirtualBox VMs.

I am not hopeful they will release a new version any time soon. Looking at their releases, last one was in April and the one before in January.

I tried rolling back upgrade, but it seems to me that as virtualbox is tied to kernel version, it didn't downgrad in the process. Anyway, I couldn't even boot 5.15.43 properly and playing with clr-boot-manager it seems that I must have removed it in the end. So now I only have lastest kernel. I am not savy enough with this and know I am playing with matches at this point, so I updated everything back to current.

I need a plan B though, I use a software on it which is relevant to me for work, and two weeks without already it starts to pile up. What would you recommend in the meantime?

786psi If you're feeling somewhat adventurous, I've patched VirtualBox with one potential fix for this issue and uploaded the packages to Google Drive. Since I don't really use VirtualBox these days, and definitely don't have a Windows VM to test I can't tell if this fixes the issue.

To get back to the original system state after testing: sudo eopkg it --reinstall virtualbox-common virtualbox(-current)

I installed this version and restored the VM from an archive in a state before just to make sure. It didn't work, still crash within a minute unfortunately :/

So Virtualbox 6.1.36 was released which hopefully fixes this issue. Pushed to the Unstable repository.

(Make sure to re-install the package after the next Sync day though)

I also installed this new version... Unfortunately, this is not a solution for me. If I try to start a VM it crashes immediately. I guess I will wait until this version reaches the stable repository and test it after the next sync day.
