EdUBudgie
Since this distro is obviously aimed at students, I thought it might be interesting to show what it makes available for them. I can't be sure than none of these are included by its parent, Ubuntu Budgie, but I rather suspect that they're all here because of EduBudgie. These are in the Education sub-menu.
And these are available from the Science sub-menu.
Certainly those mostly represent applications that are aimed at the student demographic. As pointed out before, that's obviously the focus of EdUBudgie, so it's not surprising that they represent a good bit of the VM's large size, as compared with other VMs that have been created virtually the same way.
Exploring other issues, I decided to try streaming something from Vivaldi (to watch some news), and the results were very disappointing. I can't be sure that it was any better in other VMs, without having them side-by-side to compare, so I've started my Solus Budgie VM in a workspace (on the host) next to the one where I have EdUBidgie. I realize that running two VMs at the same time may slow them both down a bit, but at least I'll be able to compare VM vs. VM, so here goes ...
Watching NewsMax (newsmax.com) in full-screen mode is understandably not quite like watching it on the host laptop, but comparing the Solus Budgie VM to the EdUBudgie VM shows a remarkable difference. The video isn't so different, but on the Solus VM the audio is normal and quite listenable, but on the other there is NO audio. And of course, since these are both running on the same host, the host audio setting is the same for both.
It's finally time for me to end this experiment, as I'm not going to be able to carry on with my normal daily conputer activities for much longer, as I have been able to with VMs of various other distros. Still, it's been a good experiment, as I've been able to explore EdUBudgie pretty thoroughly.
CONCLUSION: In my opinion, EdUBudgie wouldn't be a very good choice for someone looking for a general-purpose distribution. Individual students might be able to ignore some or all of the problems I've noted, provided that the glut of additional educational apps that it includes are important enough to them.
Again, in my opinion, it might be better to start with a more general distro like Solus, and add just those additional packages that are found to be needed. With that said, I'm now officially ending my EdUBudgie experiment, removing its VM, and looking for another interesting distribution to explore.
