WetGeek I look forward to working more with it tomorrow
Regata OS
What I intended to do today was to finish my configuration, and then use the VM full-screen for a day or so in place of its host -- my laptop -- to get more of an overall feeling for it. The first step would be to finish my setup of Vivaldi, which meant creating and naming tab stacks from the shortcuts on the Start Page. This gives you an idea of what that looks like:
As you can see, there are just a little more than 50 of those shortcuts. Most of them are used in creating those 8 tab stacks shown at the top. Clicking on one of those named tab stacks displays its contained tabs on a second line, from where they're used as tabs ordinarily are. Just like creating a menu of web sites.
I mentioned yesterday that Regata felt slow compared to other VMs that I've created the same way, but it was while building those tab stacks that the true extent of the problem emerged. As I added each tab to its appropriate stack, it started taking longer and longer before I could add the next one. By the time I was processing the 44th shortcut, the system was locking up for nearly a minute before it unfroze and I could continue. I eventually managed to get all 8 stacks built, but it was not enjoyable.
The reason I even mention this is because this VM is running on a very strong host. And dozens of VMs that I've created before, using the same amount of resources (32GB virtual drive, 4 i7 cores, 4GB ram, etc.) have undergone this same setup routine without hesitating the least bit. No screen freezes, no system lockups, none of it.
Regata has plenty of "Pros," for sure. If it's allowed to, it automaticly loads updates (in the background) that are discovered when it launches, rather than just displaying a notice that updates are available, as Solus does. And it has lots of features that will appeal to the gamers who use Regata -- its raison d'etre, I believe. But its just as important to mention any significant "Cons," and this is certainly one to be aware of.
I've already started my full-screen usage test. I'm typing this from Regata now. This time, though, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to stick it out. Later ...
