Nautilus path bar

Since the update to gnome 42 there have been, as expected, a few issues with themes, with applications like image viewer that refuse to use anything but adwaita (that will be the subject of a future question).

Nautilus, however, still respects the theme, but it's partially broken: the path bar occupies only a very small portion of the headerbar, and when the name of the directories are long it starts clipping the middle of the word, which is very annoying when you have long paths (which is often the case for me...).

Does anyone else see something like that? Or is it an issue with my theme? Any suggestion for a CSS fix? 😅
I tried looking inside Materia, but it seems to have the same issue...

elusian I'm irked the pull down arrow no longer offers you "show address" so you can cut and paste quicly into an rm/cp/mv/etc script...they obviously relocated this handy feature into the unusable header you show in your picture that cannot be cut and pasted. Sucks. So know it's not a theme issue I know of (I have quogir).
Software changes like this are a real bi*** when the stuff you really like vanishes...but bright side is there is likely an easy workaround we will no doubt find out about.

elusian Doesn't seem to happen for me, but at some point it starts cutting things off from the start of the path, if you overdo it (but that's marked with the cutoff line to show you it's happened)

edit: So what I want to say is that it's probably theme-related
edit2: Actually, it looks the same for me with Materia. It seems I misunderstood your problem. What did the path bar do before the update? Turn it into a scrollable selection? How else did it avoid having to shorten the path?

it wasn't bold and the font was a lot smaller. i think it truncated the long ones but at least you can get a cursor in there and crtl+a and cut and paste it to see whole address. not now, though. major change in my pov, but I'm sure there were reasons

@Staudey before it just had the cutoff line on the left. The cutoff also did not happen mid directory, if a name did not fit it was not displayed. In your screenshot, that would mean that you wouldn't see a random "e" left of Projects. I seem to remember an arrow showing that there were more directory on the left.
Additionally, I remember a larger portion of headerbar being used.

@brent if I understood what you are searching for, you can do ctrl + L

elusian that's my workaround, cut and paste access to /the/entire/path info!! Thank you for giving me the ctrl L. that field used to be visibly live. all good.

That wouldn't be a theme thing. They must have changed the ellipse mode in the Nautilus code and changed it to showing at least part of the name at all times.

I found the PR adding this (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/merge_requests/730), it's intentional and part of the preparation for gtk4.

I would like to check what is the situation in gnome's own theme, Adwaita, but I cannot find it in the budgie control center. Anyone knows how to obtain it?

elusian It's blacklisted in Budgie because it doesn't theme any Budgie stuff, so things will be pretty broken when using it.

I tried using GTK_THEME to override the nautilus theme and apparently Adwaita has the same issue.

Is it possible to use caja in Budgie? If I try to install it from eopkg it says it will install the whole mate-desktop, which I would prefer to avoid...
